This Artist Is Sick of It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">When the life-simulation<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/video-games\/\" class=\"text link\">game<\/a> <em>Paralives<\/em> was released in early access, Danielle Udogaranya\u2019s hand ached at the thought of making new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/youtube-natural-hair\/\" class=\"text link\">Black hairstyles<\/a> for it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It wasn&#8217;t because she didn&#8217;t want to create for the game. Udogaranya, better known as Ebonix, has spent over a decade creating custom content for life-simming games with the goal of helping people see themselves on digital screens. Her hesitation stemmed from the physical toll it takes to craft the perfect digital coil, braid, and kink\u2014painstakingly long hours and tedious precision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI thought to myself, why am I still having to do this?\u201d Udogaranya, a technical artist who has a degree in psychology, tells WIRED.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Fans of games like <em>The Sims<\/em> spend time flipping through her sites, downloading custom hair packs inspired by real-life styles not otherwise available in-game. As of now, the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/cw\/Ebonixsims\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/cw\/Ebonixsims&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/cw\/Ebonixsims\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ebonix Patreon<\/a> has over 115,000 members, and hundreds of both free and paid content items.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The reason behind the demand for custom content in life-simming games is both simple and disappointing: Natural Black hairstyles have been historically underrepresented, and the technology used to make them has been slow to improve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWith new games coming out now, I&#8217;m still seeing the issues, and I&#8217;m still seeing the \u2018Killmonger locs.\u2019 God forbid we get more than three options,\u201d Udogaranya says, in reference to the stiff, short-dreaded style featured by Michael B. Jordan\u2019s character in <em>Black Panther<\/em> that became a go-to for many games as well as some other films. Similar examples can be seen in old and new franchises alike, including <em>Tekken 8<\/em>, <em>Spider-Man 2<\/em>, <em>Apex Legends<\/em>, <em>Horizon Zero Dawn,<\/em> and more. The reason for this Black hair default? Textured hairstyles in games have been reliant on code that was not made for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIf you&#8217;re making straight hair, it\u2019s very easy to taper the ends and then make it cute,\u201d Udogaranya explains. \u201cBut when you\u2019re trying to add a black texture on it, it looks like a hot dog.\u201d Thus, immovable, cylindrical \u201cKillmonger locs\u201d are simpler to make than other natural styles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Black hair in video games has long been a design afterthought\u2014at best\u2014since some of the first Black characters entered the scene. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/black-character-history-video-games\/\" class=\"text link\">In early 8-bit era games, like SEGA\u2019s <em>Heavyweight Cham<\/em>p,<\/a> which came out in 1976, Black hairstyles appeared to emphasize minstrel-like stereotypes. During the rise of fighting games in the \u201980s and \u201990s, where more characters per game were introduced, Black hair was limited because Black player selections were limited. For example, in <em>Street Fighter<\/em>, there was only one Black character out of the 12 options. When <em>The Sims<\/em> came out in 2000, the game allowed limited customization, with hair swatches connected to different face options. Though the game allowed for three skin-tone swatches\u2014fair, medium, and dark\u2014natural hairstyle options were virtually nonexistent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the decades that followed, 3D animation and customization in gaming continued to flourish, but Black hair has trended toward only a handful of swatches, most of which provided little to minimal movement. However, there have been efforts to tackle this industrywide issue.
