But despite all the noise, most people still aren\u2019t aware of just how dangerous the trend is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Sexual strangulation or \u201cchoking\u201d during sex, as it\u2019s referred to colloquially, has become wildly popular\u2014especially among adults <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.unimelb.edu.au\/newsroom\/news\/2024\/july\/study-finds-strangling-during-sex-common,-but-understanding-is-low\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.unimelb.edu.au\/newsroom\/news\/2024\/july\/study-finds-strangling-during-sex-common,-but-understanding-is-low&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unimelb.edu.au\/newsroom\/news\/2024\/july\/study-finds-strangling-during-sex-common,-but-understanding-is-low\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aged 18 to 35<\/a>, despite the risk of severe injury, brain damage, and even death. Some researchers argue that porn is to blame for that normalization, but members of the adult industry say that banning depictions of choking won\u2019t stop this kind of content from flourishing or serve as the kind of sex education and media literacy the public sorely needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWith the misinformation that\u2019s out there, especially online, many people do think that maybe at lighter pressures they might be \u2018safe,\u2019 and that\u2019s not the case,\u201d says Debby Herbenick, a professor at the Indiana University School of Public Health and one of the leading researchers on sexual strangulation. Herbenick cautions that applying sustained pressure to the front and sides of the throat\u2014via your hands, an object, or otherwise\u2014can lead to blood clots and stroke, tears in the carotid arteries, vision impairment, and cumulative brain injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt\u2019s these things that we wouldn\u2019t even notice,\u201d she says. \u201cThose tiny, incremental changes in your vision, or your brain, or so on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Or, in the most extreme cases, death. Pressing on the front of the throat can lead to airway collapse, Herbenick says. Two weeks ago, a 16-year-old girl in Sydney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cdr7jpzxz00o\" class=\"text link\">passed out<\/a> after authorities believe she was strangled by her <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/lifestyle\/real-life\/news-life\/tributes-flow-for-sydney-schoolgirl-16-who-died-during-alleged-consensual-sex\/news-story\/82cbba27ac6f2fc8478a8461050a299e\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/lifestyle\/real-life\/news-life\/tributes-flow-for-sydney-schoolgirl-16-who-died-during-alleged-consensual-sex\/news-story\/82cbba27ac6f2fc8478a8461050a299e&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/lifestyle\/real-life\/news-life\/tributes-flow-for-sydney-schoolgirl-16-who-died-during-alleged-consensual-sex\/news-story\/82cbba27ac6f2fc8478a8461050a299e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">equally young partner<\/a> during sex. She died after being taken to a local hospital in critical condition, and the investigation is ongoing. It\u2019s unknown what her exact injuries were.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The Australian Social Services Minister <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/pervasive-and-deadly-federal-government-to-consider-a-ban-on-choking-porn-20260830-p60srk.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/pervasive-and-deadly-federal-government-to-consider-a-ban-on-choking-porn-20260830-p60srk.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/pervasive-and-deadly-federal-government-to-consider-a-ban-on-choking-porn-20260830-p60srk.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has since said<\/a> the government is \u201cvery seriously\u201d looking at efforts to ban pornographic depictions of choking in sex, in line with the country\u2019s recently passed age-verification laws that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cwyp9d3ddqyo\" class=\"text link\">ban social media<\/a> for children under the age of 16. In Herbenick\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9333342\/\" class=\"text link\">2021 survey<\/a> of nearly 5,000 college students in the US, 58 percent of women had been choked during sex and a quarter had been first choked by age 17. Herbenick found that women are <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11646831\/\" class=\"text link\">usually the ones<\/a> being choked by men during heterosexual sex and that sexual and gender minorities are also more likely to be choked during sex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThere are other people who say \u2018I asked them to choke me or I said it was OK, but then they really pushed past my limits or it was a lot harder than I expected, or I asked them to stop and they didn\u2019t,\u2019\u201d Herbenick says. She also says that while some young men enjoy the act, others \u201ctell us that they don\u2019t want to be choking their partners, but they think they\u2019re supposed to, or they get asked all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Most of the self-reported occurrences of sexual strangulation among US college students Herbenick surveyed were described as consensual, but when choking is nonconsensual, it can be even more dangerous.
