With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-el-nino-means-weather-water-global-economy\/\" class=\"text link\">El Ni\u00f1o strengthening<\/a>\u2014and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/category\/science\/environment-climate-change\/\" class=\"text link\">climate change<\/a> continuing to heat things up\u2014more records are likely in store well into next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Data from Copernicus, the European Union\u2019s climate agency, shows that last month tied with July 2023 for Earth\u2019s hottest month. (July is also usually the hottest month of the year.) This July also tied with July 2024 for the second-hottest July on record, while June 2026 was the second-hottest June ever recorded. The news comes on the heels of a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/news\/national-climate-202608\" class=\"text link\">announcement<\/a> on Wednesday from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which declared this was the hottest summer for the US, beating a previous record set during the Dust Bowl.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The sweltering summer is a grim sign of how burning fossil fuels is pushing temperatures up around the globe while unleashing more intense and longer heat waves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAugust 2026 was a remarkable month in the global climate record,\u201d Samantha Burgess, the strategic lead for climate at the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, said in a statement. \u201cCombined with record global sea surface temperatures and the warmest summer on record for Western Europe, these observations show how climate change is driving extremes across both the atmosphere and the oceans. The impacts of these conditions are increasingly being felt by communities, economies, and ecosystems across the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The global average temperature for August was 1.65 degrees Celsius (3 degrees Fahrenheit) above the preindustrial average, according to Copernicus. Record-breaking fires also raged across parts of Europe, unleashing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/france-records-first-pyrocumulonimbus-cloud-wildfires\/\" class=\"text link\">first documented fire cloud in France<\/a> and threatening a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/spanish-wildfires-nasa-deep-space-observatory\/\" class=\"text link\">key NASA observatory in Spain<\/a>. In North America, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/northeast-us-blanketed-in-canadian-wildfire-smoke\/\" class=\"text link\">wildfires in Canada<\/a> and northern parts of the US filled areas across the Northeast with smoke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Climate change has boosted background temperatures, but the El Ni\u00f1o roiling the eastern Pacific Ocean has piled on more heat. El Ni\u00f1os usually coincide with a temporary uptick in global temperature from 0.1 to 0.2 degrees Celsius. This year\u2019s El Ni\u00f1o is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/2026-supersized-el-nino-impacts-worsen\/\" class=\"text link\">forecast to reach record strength<\/a> and upend weather around the globe. But the full impact on the planet\u2019s temperature won\u2019t be felt until next year, meaning that next summer may be even hotter than the one we just lived through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Climate scientists have warned that the world needs to prevent long-term average warming from breaching 1.5 degrees Celsius to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. While temperatures above the threshold for a single month don\u2019t represent a permanent breach of this temperature, they\u2019re a sign that the world is getting closer to this benchmark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Earlier this month, the UN warned in a report that the world is likely to cross the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold in a few years. To slow and eventually reverse the rise in global temperatures, the world needs to stop burning fossil fuels and lower carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThis summer\u2019s scorching heat, raging wildfires, and deadly floods are a warning of what lies ahead,\u201d UN Secretary-General Ant\u0151nio Guterres said in a statement. \u201cWe must make the overshoot above 1.5 degrees as small and short as possible.
