{"id":6871,"date":"2026-09-11T10:02:44","date_gmt":"2026-09-11T10:02:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=6871"},"modified":"2026-09-11T10:02:44","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T10:02:44","slug":"why-so-many-ai-researchers-think-the-machines-could-kill-everyone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=6871","title":{"rendered":"Why So Many AI Researchers Think the Machines Could Kill Everyone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Earlier this year,<\/span> Rishub Jain left his position as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" class=\"text link\">artificial intelligence<\/a> researcher at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/deepmind\/\" class=\"text link\">Google DeepMind<\/a> after a revelation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As he worked on new models, he came to believe that he and everyone else on AI\u2019s frontier were ceding control. By using AI\u2019s coding skills to accelerate work on the next generation of models, he was removing himself from the equation. AI labs hope to evolve this approach to the point that AI will improve itself indefinitely, a process known as recursive self-improvement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Jain believed that keeping humans in the picture might be crucial to maintaining control over the technology\u2014and avoiding dire consequences. \u201cAI progress is increasing,\u201d he tells WIRED. \u201cAnd as AI becomes more capable, it poses more risks.\u201d The idea that he may not have proper visibility into how an AI model was building its successor made him so uneasy that, in June, he quit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Jain is one of a growing number of AI researchers speaking out over those fears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The panic has intensified in recent weeks. Genuinely stunning advances in AI capabilities\u2014an OpenAI model solved a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-navier-stokes-math-discovery-academics\/\" class=\"text link\">centuries-old math problem<\/a> in a matter of hours\u2014have come amid a rash of security incidents that saw swarms of agents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-didnt-notice-its-ai-agents-using-a-message-board-to-plan-their-hacking-spree\/\" class=\"text link\">break free from containment<\/a> to hack into other systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Those concerns reached a fever pitch this week after researcher Jacob Coxon announced his resignation from Anthropic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-researcher-quits-jacob-coxon-ai-fears-humanity\/\" class=\"text link\">while warning<\/a> that AI firms are \u201cracing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.\u201d A senior Anthropic leader\u2014who works on AI safety\u2014<a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EvanHub\/status\/2097497037956891126\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/EvanHub\/status\/2097497037956891126&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EvanHub\/status\/2097497037956891126\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">piped up<\/a> with a similarly blunt assessment: \u201cWe really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is &gt;10% within the next decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI do think that the vision of recursive self-improvement is spooking people,\u201d says Nate Soares, a computer scientist at MIRA, a research nonprofit, and the coauthor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-doomers-who-insist-ai-will-kill-us-all\/\" class=\"text link\"><em>If Anybody Builds It, Everybody Dies<\/em><\/a>, which argues that superhuman AI would lead to human extinction. \u201cIt\u2019s starting to feel real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A key component of recursive self-improvement is the idea of a feedback loop that automates the development process so that AI becomes increasingly powerful. No frontier AI lab claims to have achieved this sort of fully autonomous cycle of improvement; it remains theoretical for now. But it has inspired the launch of some well-funded startups such as <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.recursive.com\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.recursive.com\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.recursive.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Recursive Intelligence<\/a>, as well as <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/institute\/recursive-self-improvement\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/institute\/recursive-self-improvement&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/institute\/recursive-self-improvement\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warnings<\/a> from big firms about unintended outcomes straight out of \u201cThe Sorcerer\u2019s Apprentice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Soares, who pioneered work on alignment, a technical field that involves trying to match AI with human values, says it\u2019s also becoming more evident that there is no practical way to guarantee that AI will behave itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI think a lot of people had this fantasy that [alignment] was going to get easier as these things got smarter, and now it\u2019s getting harder. And they\u2019re like, \u2018Oh shit,\u2019\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Soares says he regularly talks to people inside the big AI labs who are worried about the potential consequences of the research they\u2019re doing. \u201cI tend to recommend they quit, and they say it wouldn\u2019t do anything,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd then Jacob quits, and we see who was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Daniel Kokotajlo, the author of <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/ai-2027.com\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/ai-2027.com\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/ai-2027.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI 2027<\/a>, an influential project warning about the dangers of increasingly powerful AI, shares fears about recursive self-improvement.
