{"id":6885,"date":"2026-09-11T14:30:27","date_gmt":"2026-09-11T14:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=6885"},"modified":"2026-09-11T14:30:27","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T14:30:27","slug":"conspiracy-how-9-11-broke-americas-brain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=6885","title":{"rendered":"How 9\/11 Made Everyone a Conspiracy Theorist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">There are many,<\/span> many strange things about the stew of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/conspiracy-theories\/\" class=\"text link\">conspiracy theories<\/a> that fall under the umbrella of \u201c9\/11 Truth\u201d\u2014the false, often antisemitic worldview purporting that the US government had inside knowledge of or even actively participated in the September 11 attacks. But perhaps the strangest is that the seed of these theories was planted three months before the attacks themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It was June 28, 2001, when Milton William \u201cBill\u201d Cooper took to the air on his national radio show after watching a news report on CNN. \u201cSupposedly, a CNN reporter found Osama bin Laden, took a television camera crew with him, went into Osama bin Laden&#8217;s hideout, interviewed him and his top leadership, his top lieutenants and colonels and generals in their hideout,\u201d Cooper told his listeners. \u201cHe came out and told everybody, \u2018Within three weeks, Osama bin Laden is going to attack the United States and Israel.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Cooper had part of the story right\u2014a reporter had indeed just reached the inner sanctum of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/al-qaeda\/\" class=\"text link\">al Qaeda<\/a> in the mountains near Kandahar, Afghanistan, but he was actually a correspondent for a Middle Eastern broadcaster. And that reporter, the MBC correspondent Baker Atyani, had actually interviewed al Qaeda\u2019s military chief, Mohammed Atif, not bin Laden. \u201cIn the coming weeks, there will be a big surprise; we are going to hit American and Israeli installations,\u201d Atif told Atyani. \u201cThe coffin business will increase in the United States.\u201d <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/backup.arabnews.com\/node\/1159046\/world\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/backup.arabnews.com\/node\/1159046\/world&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/backup.arabnews.com\/node\/1159046\/world\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">According to Atyani<\/a>, bin Laden\u2014who was present for the interview\u2014smiled and nodded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">To Cooper, speaking on the radio that day, the interview represented either a major embarrassment for the US government, which had been hunting bin Laden for years, or it was evidence that the government was lying about the threat from bin Laden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cNow, don\u2019t you think that\u2019s kind of strange, folks?\u201d Cooper said. \u201cThe largest intelligence apparatus in the world, with the biggest budget in the history of the world, has been looking for Osama bin Laden for years and years and years and can&#8217;t find him. The FBI, also under the leadership of Louis Freeh, has been looking for Osama bin Laden for years and years and years and years and years and many years and can\u2019t find him. Some doofus jerk-off reporter with a camera crew waltzes right into his hideout and interviews him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cNow that tells us two things: Either everyone in the intelligence community and all of the intelligence agencies of the United States government are blithering idiots and incompetent fools, including the entire apparatus of the FBI and all of their personnel\u2014or they&#8217;re lying to us. They&#8217;re not looking for him at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Cooper went on to say that \u201cthe CIA created Osama bin Laden\u201d and that \u201cthey&#8217;re now using him to help bring about world government by making him the big boogeyman because they can&#8217;t use [Iraqi dictator] Saddam Hussein anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Cooper argued that the whole threat from bin Laden was a farce\u2014what would now be called a \u201cfalse flag\u201d operation. \u201cIf you believe it, you are one of the stupidest jerks that ever lived on the face of this earth, and whatever\u2019s going to happen they\u2019re going to blame on Osama bin Laden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">About 10 weeks later, Cooper\u2019s comment would come to be seen as a prophecy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The events and aftermath of 9\/11 altered almost every aspect of American society: from the ever-present security theater of daily life\u2014the 3.4-ounce liquid bottles at airports, the defensive bollards that now dominate so many urban landscapes\u2014to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/20-years-after-911-surveillance-has-become-a-way-of-life\/\" class=\"text link\">expansion<\/a> of the surveillance state, to 20 years of war in Afghanistan, to the backdrop of fear and anxiety that permeates the culture.
