{"id":6945,"date":"2026-09-12T17:15:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-12T17:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=6945"},"modified":"2026-09-12T17:15:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-12T17:15:14","slug":"anthropic-ceo-slow-down-ai-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=6945","title":{"rendered":"Anthropic CEO says it\u2019s time to pump the brakes on AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says the time has come to slow down AI development and will give third-party evaluators like <a href=\"https:\/\/metr.org\/\">METR<\/a> access to its models to help ensure its \u201cadherence to safety practices and commitments.\u201d In a <a href=\"https:\/\/darioamodei.com\/post\/we-must-pace-the-frontier#pacing-within-democracies\">winding essay<\/a>, Amodei proposed a three-step plan to \u201cpace the frontier\u201d \u2014 jargon that simply means to slow the pace of training and development to give companies time to build safeguards and regulators to evaluate models.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Amodei says that giving external evaluators wide-ranging access is just the first step, and one it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/994064\/anthropic-spent-this-week-in-hot-water-over-cybersecurity\">taking now unilaterally<\/a>. Step two would involve the industry coming together as a whole, likely with government agencies to \u201cestablish common safety standards as well as limits on the rate of unchecked AI progress.\u201d This step would focus on AI companies operating in democratic countries, but because passing laws and building regulatory infrastructure takes time, Amodei says that the industry should work together to create safety standards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The third step would be the most challenging \u2014 getting authoritarian governments like those in China and Russia to agree to slow development and adopt a global set of AI safety standards. But he also says it\u2019s crucial that the US and other democracies maintain a technological lead over China and other authoritarian regimes by limiting their access to high-powered chips and cracking down on things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/949644\/china-white-house-anthropic-mythos\">distillation<\/a> that allow companies to quickly catch up by training its AI to replicate the behavior of a more powerful model.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Amodei says that his concern stems from two primary factors. First is the emergence of recursive self-improvement, or RSI, in which AI systems train the next generation of AI, leading to rapidly accelerating capabilities. \u201cLeft unchecked, it could outrun our ability to understand and control these systems,\u201d he says.
