Yesterday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a lengthy open letter<\/a> saying it was time to \u201cpace the frontier\u201d and slow down AI development. OpenAI\u2019s Sam Altman<\/a> and Elon Musk<\/a> both agreed, publicly voicing their support on X. Even Alphabet\u2019s Demis Hassabis offered tentative support<\/a> for Amodei\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, however, seem to think the AI executives are being overreactive<\/a> and fear that a pause could lead to China outpacing the US in the AI race. According to the Financial Times<\/a><\/em>, Trump said \u201cLook, we\u2019re leading China in AI … and, frankly, I want to keep it that way, because whoever wins AI, wins.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Johnson echoed those sentiments <\/a>on CNN<\/em>, telling Jake Tapper that rushing to place restrictions on AI development could be a \u201cnational security threat.\u201d He urged people not to panic. \u201cIf Congress just races in and does some sort of emergency session to try and regulate AI, we will lose the race to China.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
