{"id":7099,"date":"2026-09-15T23:44:46","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T23:44:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7099"},"modified":"2026-09-15T23:44:46","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T23:44:46","slug":"flow-neuroscience-headset-help-depression-available-in-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7099","title":{"rendered":"A New Headset to Help With Depression Is Now Available in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">An at-home wearable<\/span> for the treatment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/depression\" class=\"text link\">depression<\/a> is now available by prescription in the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">With roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12829365\/\" class=\"text link\">one in six American adults<\/a> taking an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/why-antidepressants-take-so-long-to-work\/\" class=\"text link\">antidepressant medication<\/a>, Swedish firm Flow Neuroscience is positioning its device as an alternative to traditional drugs. But at the current four-figure price tag, it might take a while for the futuristic-looking headset to catch on with patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Worn on the forehead for 30 minutes a day and operated with an app, the device provides low-intensity electrical stimulation to the left frontal lobe of the brain, an area involved in regulating mood and emotions. People with depression tend to have lower activity and weaker neural connections in that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/brains-and-behavior\/\" class=\"text link\">part of the brain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Flow received approval from the Food and Drug Administration last December, and its device is among a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/expired-tired-wired-wearables\/\" class=\"text link\">new breed of wearables<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/get-ready-for-more-brain-scanning-consumer-gadgets\/\" class=\"text link\">monitor<\/a>, record from, or stimulate the brain. California-based Cognixion, for instance, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/this-startup-wants-to-put-its-brain-computer-interface-in-the-apple-vision-pro\/\" class=\"text link\">modified the Apple Vision Pro<\/a> to build a communication system for paralyzed people that doesn\u2019t depend on speech or motor control. A headband by Muse promises to improve meditation, and a device by Elemind is meant to help people fall asleep faster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The Flow device targets the same part of the brain as transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, an approved treatment for depression that uses magnetic fields to activate neurons. With TMS, patients have to go to a clinic, and a full dosing series typically requires treatment sessions administered five days a week over several weeks.
