This has happened several times already at the event he\u2019s hosting on a Friday night in San Jose, California. All the speakers before him patiently paused when the train on the nearby tracks roared by, its loud horn blaring, then resumed talking. But Rossmann is mid-sentence in his rapid-fire delivery about the topic he\u2019s fiercely passionate about, and he doesn\u2019t stop. He shouts over the train.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3nllP-962h4\" class=\"text link\">penultimate stop<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lyFcIlkngiY?si=jVe_cptWAfaUn1A5\" class=\"text link\">Own Your Shit<\/a> tour, a US-wide odyssey of events this summer put on by ownership advocate and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@rossmanngroup\" class=\"text link\">YouTuber<\/a> Louis Rossmann and his advocacy nonprofit <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/bounties.fulu.org\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/bounties.fulu.org\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/bounties.fulu.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fulu<\/a>. Around 80 people have crammed into the narrow side porch of a brewery. The main call to action is to kill a very specific piece of legislation: Section 1201 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2008\/10\/ten-years-later\/\" class=\"text link\">Digital Millennium Copyright Act<\/a>. Enacted in 1998, this section of the DMCA prohibits bypassing digital restrictions and locks enabled by a product manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Ostensibly, the legislation was meant to ensure device security. Ownership and repair advocates have long criticized it for helping companies put software locks on devices and then charge owners for access to their own hardware. Rossmann, along with fellow advocate Kevin O\u2019Reilly, started Fulu to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/fulu-repair-bounties-nest-molekule\/\" class=\"text link\">pay out bounties<\/a> for people who can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/a-10k-bounty-awaits-anyone-who-can-hack-ring-cameras-to-stop-sharing-data-with-amazon\/\" class=\"text link\">disable digital locks<\/a> on a device, even if there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/a-10k-bounty-aims-to-make-the-ps5-a-computer-again\/\" class=\"text link\">legal consequences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cHow many people here enjoy it when they get threats of lawsuits?\u201d Rossmann asks during the San Jose event. \u201cRaise your hand.\u201d Maybe four or five hands go up, including a grinning Rohit Chopra, the former director of the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. \u201cI enjoy when people try to sue me,\u201d Rossmann says. \u201cWhen they send me threats, I literally frame them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">His presentation bounces through his various ownership- and repair-oriented fights. He accuses companies of adding paid subscriptions to their products after customers buy them as a form of \u201cransomware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It\u2019s a righteous screed that feels infectious in the crowd. People cheer and call out their own ownership issues. Rossmann is a preacher at the pulpit of people pissed off by subscription services, the steady <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/physical-media-is-having-a-comeback-the-next-console-generation-may-kill-it\/\" class=\"text link\">decline of physical media<\/a>, and the inability to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/right-to-repair\/\" class=\"text link\">fix their stuff<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The Own Your Shit tour comes as people grow increasingly angry with companies like Sony <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/sony-playstation-puts-a-nail-in-physical-medias-coffin\/\" class=\"text link\">ending physical disc support<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/sony-erases-digital-content-from-libraries\/\" class=\"text link\">deleting digital items<\/a> in customers\u2019 libraries.
