{"id":7215,"date":"2026-09-17T21:27:57","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T21:27:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7215"},"modified":"2026-09-17T21:27:57","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T21:27:57","slug":"customer-data-permanently-lost-in-iran-strikes-on-amazon-data-centers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7215","title":{"rendered":"Customer Data Permanently Lost in Iran Strikes on Amazon Data Centers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Half a year<\/span> after Iranian drone strikes knocked out multiple Amazon data centers, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/amazon-web-services-glitch-oh-no\/\" class=\"text link\">US tech company<\/a> has acknowledged the permanent loss of some customer data that was hosted in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Amazon Web Services was \u201cunable to restore access to the resources and data\u201d hosted in some of the war-damaged data centers, according to an <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/health.aws.amazon.com\/health\/status\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/health.aws.amazon.com\/health\/status&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/health.aws.amazon.com\/health\/status\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AWS dashboard update<\/a> posted on September 15. The development was first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/amazons-aws-is-unable-restore-access-bahrain-one-uae-cloud-data-zone-after-war-2026-09-15\" class=\"text link\">reported by Reuters<\/a> and suggests that the Iranian strikes inflicted catastrophic damage on the data centers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Customer data was irretrievably lost in one of three <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/global-infrastructure\/latest\/regions\/aws-availability-zones.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/global-infrastructure\/latest\/regions\/aws-availability-zones.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/global-infrastructure\/latest\/regions\/aws-availability-zones.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AWS availability zones<\/a> in the United Arab Emirates region, specifically the mec1-az2 availability zone. Each availability zone is serviced by one or more Amazon data centers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The company is still working on \u201crecovering regional resources\u201d and restoring resources hosted in the other two availability zones in the United Arab Emirates. The AWS update described ongoing work to replace \u201caffected infrastructure\u201d and promised to update customers on a restoration of services in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But the destruction was apparently even more widespread for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-data-centers-broke-american-politics\/\" class=\"text link\">data centers<\/a> in the Bahrain region, because Amazon said it was unable to restore access to resources and data across all three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-gulfs-ai-boom-has-an-undersea-cable-problem\/\" class=\"text link\">availability zones<\/a> there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe damage to our infrastructure spanned multiple availability zones and exceeded what our regional and multi-AZ services are designed to withstand,\u201d the AWS update said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The company had already suspended customer billing in the affected AWS regions in Bahrain and the UAE and has spent the past six months attempting to restore normal operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The Iranian drones first struck the Amazon data centers on March 1 in the opening days of the ongoing war that began with US-Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">AWS immediately urged customers to migrate resources to other cloud regions and use remote backups to restore any \u201cinaccessible resources.\u201d The cloud service also reportedly issued <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/phoebeliu\/2026\/04\/21\/ai-data-centers-are-now-big-geopolitical-risk-securing-them-against-iran-attackers-drones-business\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/phoebeliu\/2026\/04\/21\/ai-data-centers-are-now-big-geopolitical-risk-securing-them-against-iran-attackers-drones-business\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/phoebeliu\/2026\/04\/21\/ai-data-centers-are-now-big-geopolitical-risk-securing-them-against-iran-attackers-drones-business\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$150 million in customer credits<\/a> following the initial Iranian strikes in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/amazons-cloud-business-bahrain-damaged-iran-strike-ft-reports-2026-04-01\/\" class=\"text link\">follow-up Iranian strike<\/a> focused on Amazon\u2019s data centers in Bahrain on April 1. The latest AWS update acknowledged this \u201cdisruption\u201d of a second availability zone in the Bahrain region in April but described most affected customers as having already followed the company\u2019s recommendations to migrate their cloud computing workloads elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">On July 24, Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched yet another strike using missiles that specifically targeted a remaining Amazon data center structure in Bahrain. That damage was independently confirmed by satellite imagery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe remain committed to supporting our customers in Bahrain in the long term and will share a further update in early 2027,\u201d the latest AWS update said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Meanwhile, the US-Israeli war with Iran has since spiraled into a broader regional conflict and growing global energy crisis because of attacks on shipping in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/an-open-strait-of-hormuz-wont-fix-gas-prices-overnight\/\" class=\"text link\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
