What\u2019s less clear\u2014even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/if-the-ai-industry-followed-its-own-research-it-might-have-paused-already\/\" class=\"text link\">among AI\u2019s technical elite<\/a>\u2014is precisely how to keep these mercurial algorithms in check.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In recent years researchers have thrown around all sorts of ideas for preventing AI from turning nasty. They include less controversial plans such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/washington-wont-be-regulating-ai-anytime-soon\/\" class=\"text link\">tighter government regulations<\/a>, new ways of measuring progress, and probing the inner workings of models, as well as more outlandish proposals like placing tracking devices inside GPUs, and even ceremonially destroying large numbers of AI chips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">With political and public pressure now growing for a more measured approach to building AI, however, the answer to keeping AI safe is still unclear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe need to start treating this as a research problem,\u201d says Raymond Douglas, an AI researcher at the University of Toronto and coauthor of a new report titled <a data-offer-url=\"http:\/\/pacing.tech\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;http:\/\/pacing.tech&quot;}\" href=\"http:\/\/pacing.tech\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Pacing the Frontier, A Research Agenda<\/em><\/a>, which warns that slowing down AI development remains an unsolved puzzle. \u201cWe don&#8217;t really understand what our options even are or what they will do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Talk of AI doom has reached a fever pitch in recent weeks after an Anthropic researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-researcher-quits-jacob-coxon-ai-fears-humanity\/\" class=\"text link\">left the company and warned<\/a> that within a couple of years, AI might be on course to wipe out humanity. The head of Anthropic\u2019s AI safety lab swiftly <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EvanHub\/status\/2097497037956891126?s=20\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/EvanHub\/status\/2097497037956891126?s=20&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EvanHub\/status\/2097497037956891126?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">echoed<\/a> his concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The leaders of America\u2019s big AI companies\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/dario-amodei\/\" class=\"text link\">Dario Amodei<\/a> of Anthropic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/sam-altman\/\" class=\"text link\">Sam Altman<\/a> of OpenAI, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/elon-musk\/\" class=\"text link\">Elon Musk<\/a> of SpaceXAI, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-deepminds-ceo-demis-hassabis-thinks-ai-will-make-humans-less-selfish\/\" class=\"text link\">Demis Hassabis<\/a> of Google DeepMind\u2014have all now chimed in to offer support for some sort of AI slowdown or pause.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The issue seems especially pressing because AI companies are now using AI itself to build ever-more powerful models. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/why-so-many-ai-researchers-think-the-machines-could-kill-everyone\/\" class=\"text link\">has sparked fears<\/a> of an accelerating recursive self-improvement (RSI) loop that would see AI outstrip humans\u2019 ability to comprehend what it is up to within a few years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The AI labs are already touting new approaches of their own. This week Anthropic announced <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/institute\/measuring-pace-of-ai-development\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/institute\/measuring-pace-of-ai-development&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/institute\/measuring-pace-of-ai-development\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">several new ways<\/a> to track how rapidly\u2014and perhaps dangerously\u2014artificial intelligence is advancing. The techniques show, for example, that Claude now does 26 percent of Anthropic\u2019s AI research, compared to zero at the beginning of 2026. They also reveal that Anthropic spent 6 percent of its compute budget on figuring out how to make its AI safer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But Douglas and other experts say controlling AI development effectively and reliably will require funding and expertise from outside the AI labs themselves. Some of the proposed solutions\u2014both from this latest report and beyond\u2014seem more within reach than others.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">\u2018Independent\u2019 Evaluators<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">One idea often floated by AI companies is giving third-party evaluators greater access to their models. These evaluators test models to assess their capabilities and \u201cred team\u201d them by trying to elicit misbehavior within trusted environments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Geoffrey Irving, former chief scientist at the UK AI Security Institute, and before that a researcher at Google DeepMind, believes rigorous inspections could effectively pause the development of frontier AI for now. \u201cIn the near term, inspections and audits work, or even just mutual agreements,\u201d Irving says. \u201cI do think the companies are afraid of RSI and misaligned takeoff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Some doomsayers argue that such inspections would need to be more independent and scientifically rigorous than they currently are. The fact that some AI agents have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-models-escaped-containment-and-hacked-huggingface\/\" class=\"text link\">recently escaped containment<\/a> during testing certainly seems to suggest that more rigor may be required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Connor Leahy, head of Control AI, a nonprofit that advocates for AI controls, says inspections should involve the FBI or the NSA. \u201cWhen [big AI companies] say \u2018independent evaluators,\u2019 they mean \u2018I want to pay my friends who live in my group houses to look at my prompts.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/heres-how-an-ai-slowdown-could-actually-work\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many AI researchers seem to firmly believe that the technology they are developing could someday prove very dangerous.
