The goal is to present people with a \u201ccuddly introduction to life with a real data center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/data-centers\/\" class=\"text link\">Data Centers<\/a> are very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-data-centers-broke-american-politics\/\" class=\"text link\"><em>un<\/em>-vogue<\/a> right now. Built out by all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/inside-metas-experiments-with-data-center-robots\/\" class=\"text link\">big AI<\/a> companies to power their increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ai-agents-are-thirsty-for-power\/\" class=\"text link\">power-hungry<\/a> AI tools, data centers have spread across thousands of acres of land in the US. They have been heavily criticized for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/real-reason-data-center-gas-power-plants-are-so-dirty\/\" class=\"text link\">energy consumption<\/a> and expansion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/us-data-centers-drive-gas-power-expansion\/\" class=\"text link\">gas power<\/a>. They have also proven to be audibly annoying, stirring up <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/articles\/view\/communities-are-raising-noise-pollution-concernsabout-data-centers\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/articles\/view\/communities-are-raising-noise-pollution-concernsabout-data-centers&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/articles\/view\/communities-are-raising-noise-pollution-concernsabout-data-centers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">complaints<\/a> about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/09\/17\/nx-s1-5954414\/residents-file-lawsuit-challenging-noise-pollution-from-elon-musks-data-center\" class=\"text link\">noise pollution<\/a> from those nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The Adopt a Data Center stunt aims to make people think differently about how services produced by data centers fit into their lives. That manifests as a plush stuffie that looks like a server rack in a data center, albeit with long arms and legs and googly eyes. It\u2019s cute in the way <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9C_HReR_McQ?si=2-Eg8WmG5CkKP8Ai\" class=\"text link\">Don\u2019t Hug Me I\u2019m Scared<\/a> is cute. Squeeze Bezzy\u2019s torso and the sound bursts out. It\u2019s a screeching few seconds of a recording taken by a neighbor of a data center in Virginia. The tag on the Bezzy plushie reads, \u201cHug me for ear-piercing forever hum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe picked this recording as it was the clearest and most suitably irritating,\u201d wrote Rajeev Basu, the founder of Basura, in an email to WIRED. In an interview with the person who recorded the audio, Basu says they described the sound as \u201clike a car alarm going off nonstop. And your power grid.\u201d Basu says the project is the result of dozens of interviews with people who live near data centers in the US.
