They Can\u2019t Quit It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Mathematician Tristan Buckmaster<\/span> believes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/openai\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenAI<\/a> used his work to rush ahead and beat him to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-navier-stokes-math-discovery-academics\/\" class=\"text link\">solving a legendary math problem<\/a> with a $1 million bounty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But that\u2019s not been enough for him to stop using the company\u2019s models\u2014and he\u2019s not the only mathematician that feels that way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cEven if you don&#8217;t agree with any of this, you&#8217;re kind of stuck. With AI being so useful, it&#8217;s hard to completely prevent oneself from using it,\u201d Buckmaster tells WIRED. \u201cThese companies have a monopoly, and there is not much choice,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the week and half since the New York University professor accused OpenAI of copying his approach, Buckmaster has been using the company\u2019s coding agent Codex to tidy up his research papers. When he has time to do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/math\/\" class=\"text link\">math<\/a> (which he says is rare, since the fallout thrust him into the spotlight), the tool has been helping him understand the logical steps OpenAI\u2019s agents might have taken to get from his earlier workings to the final proof.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Buckmaster had used Codex as well as Anthropic\u2019s competing Claude to work on what\u2019s known as the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/anthropic\/\" class=\"text link\">Anthropic<\/a> researcher Levent Alp\u00f6ge. OpenAI deployed tens of thousands of agents to reach the solution, but only after it learned the equation was close to being solved, Buckmaster says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">When Buckmaster went public with his claims, it ignited a firestorm about artificial intelligence and whether it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/mathematician-steven-strogatz-grapples-with-ai-recent-breakthroughs\/\" class=\"text link\">make human mathematicians obsolete<\/a>. It also led OpenAI to do an investigation and amend <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/navier-stokes-solution\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/navier-stokes-solution\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/navier-stokes-solution\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its announcement<\/a> about solving Navier-Stokes to say it \u201cconfirmed that Buckmaster\u2019s Codex prompts over the two months preceding this announcement and paper on September 8, 2026, could not have influenced the system in any way, including through training.\u201d The company pointed WIRED to its announcement in an email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Showing that AI was pushing the boundaries of mathematics was \u201cmore important than the result,\u201d Buckmaster says. But churning out solutions to long-standing math problems without fully crediting the human work undergirding them\u2014especially ahead of major IPOs\u2014is irresponsible and \u201cchildish,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Other mathematicians have raised similar concerns. Only a handful of people on the planet understand the techniques in geometric group theory that German mathematician Andreas Thom has dedicated the last two decades to developing. So when OpenAI <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/ten-advances-in-mathematics\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/ten-advances-in-mathematics\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/ten-advances-in-mathematics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in August that its Astra model had used them to prove a long-standing problem he had been working on, \u201cI was amazed,\u201d says Thom. \u201cAnd of course I was wondering, how did they learn about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">So he says he asked OpenAI researchers Mark Sellke and S\u00e9bastien Bubeck. In an August email, he pointed out that the firm\u2019s assertion that \u201cno progress\u201d had been made on the problem in the last decade overlooked a 2019 paper of his, as well as other mathematicians\u2019 work. The company amended its press release. He and a colleague had been using ChatGPT to assist their work on the problem in the months running up to the result, but when he asked if their interactions had been fed into training data, Thom says Sellke replied: \u201cThat did not happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI set it aside,\u201d Thom recalls. \u201cI&#8217;m not so much interested in these political things; I want to work on mathematics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While Thom has seen OpenAI\u2019s statement that Buckmaster\u2019s prompts couldn&#8217;t have influenced the system, he says he doesn\u2019t trust this and concedes he will probably never know whether his work actually fed the result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAI really kills this entire idea that you could trace back who contributed what,\u201d he says. \u201cThat is probably over.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/mathematicians-cant-quit-ai\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mathematician Tristan Buckmaster believes OpenAI used his work to rush ahead and beat him to solving a legendary math problem with a $1 million bounty.
