{"id":7333,"date":"2026-09-20T11:54:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-20T11:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7333"},"modified":"2026-09-20T11:54:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-20T11:54:09","slug":"inside-dogs-anonymous-the-online-support-group-for-people-with-difficult-dogs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7333","title":{"rendered":"Welcome to Dogs Anonymous, the Online Support Group for People With Difficult Dogs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Just past 6<\/span> pm on a recent Wednesday night, half a dozen pet owners logged into a Zoom meeting to confess something they\u2019re afraid to talk about in public: They\u2019re fed up with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/dogs\/\" class=\"text link\">dogs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Before discussion began, Louise Crane, the president and cofounder of <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.dogsanonymous.org\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.dogsanonymous.org\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dogsanonymous.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dogs Anonymous<\/a>, the organization hosting the meeting, recited the seven acknowledgements participants must agree to, the first being, \u201cI admit that life with my dog is not what I imagined.\u201d Crane wore a black T-shirt exclaiming \u201cAbolish ICE\u201d in thick white lettering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI may need to be talked off a ledge,\u201d one attendee said as conversation kicked off, mentioning that she wasn\u2019t sure how to handle her dog\u2019s mood swings. Her family had been through a series of new changes: Their other dog died and they were also fostering one, and now their boxer was \u201cunsettled\u201d and \u201cgrumpy\u201d to the point he was doing more \u201cdemand barking, which has never been like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Other attendees confessed their private shames: a shepherd mix had started engaging in more intense \u201cresource guarding\u201d when around other dogs\u2014the term for when dogs aggressively protect something they value. \u201cHe got into it with my sister\u2019s little weiner dog the other day because they both were begging for food.\u201d One woman, who lives in a busy apartment complex, needed advice on how to better handle her dachshund\u2019s constant barking at strangers. (In the spirit of anonymity, Dogs Anonymous asked WIRED to leave out the names and identifying characteristics of its participants.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Shame is the emotion attendees struggle with the most in these meetings. \u201cThe embarrassment of having a dog that\u2019s losing its shit, especially as a woman,\u201d is difficult for some people, Crane tells me when we speak a few days before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Crane launched Dogs Anonymous, a nonprofit focused on training and emotional support by animal behavior experts, in 2025 in an attempt to help people vocalize their shame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe wanted to give people not just a space they could trust for advice on behavior issues or if they are having a crisis with their dog, but also a place where they don\u2019t feel judged to ask questions and admit that maybe it\u2019s a little bit too much for them,\u201d Daphne Mendoza-Tervanis, a cofounder, says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Sessions are held weekly and span first-time and experienced dog owners, adopters, foster caregivers, and occasionally trainers seeking tips on how to work aggression cases. The meetings are primarily attended by US residents, though previous sessions have attracted dog owners from Singapore, Costa Rica, and beyond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Jerri Scherff, a cofounder who is 13 years sober, had first-hand experience with recovery programs, and it was important to her that Dogs Anonymous also include some of the same traditions as Alcoholics Anonymous. \u201cWe wanted to create something that was repeatable, sustainable, and eventually autonomous, which is the way that recovery groups work,\u201d she says. The most important one was anonymity\u2014what is discussed in the group stays in the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The founders say the effectiveness of the group doesn\u2019t necessarily stem from the advice they impart during meetings but comes from members bonding over shared struggles. \u201cThe magic of AA the community is that you are going through something that somebody else has either been through or they\u2019re going through the same thing,\u201d Crane adds.
