But even as a skeptic, when the entire internet is freaking out about something, I have to admit my interest is piqued. So, when <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/practical-magic-2-review\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/practical-magic-2-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Practical Magic 2<\/a><\/em> finally hit theaters after months of anticipation from fans, the fanfare was enough to make me finally watch the original after years of it slipping through my watchlist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here were my thoughts after finally tackling <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/practical-magic-fall-activities\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/practical-magic-fall-activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Practical Magic<\/a><\/em> as an adult. <\/strong>I have to admit, I was nervous that without the haze of millennial nostalgia softening my view and years of hyping up the watch, my expectations would outweigh the actual film, but luckily the watch held up. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-today-s-movies-are-so-worried-about-feeling-current-that-they-don-t-feel-lasting\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Today\u2019s movies are so worried about feeling current that they don\u2019t feel lasting<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My number one problem with all the reboots and sequels we see today, other than a craving for <a href=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/original-tv-shows-to-watch\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/original-tv-shows-to-watch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">original stories<\/a>, is that they always seem to erase the original charm of the film in the name of modernizing. We watch beloved characters reference Instagram and TikTok and use Gen Z slang that\u2019s already dated by the time the movie premieres. <strong>The reason <em>Practical Magic<\/em>\u2019s charm and whimsy translate so seamlessly decades after its release is that it isn\u2019t overly focused on timely references.<\/strong> Of course, the feel is inevitably very \u201990s, from the color grading to the outfits, but the themes themselves are timelessly relatable.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-sisterhood-is-the-strongest-part-of-the-film\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The sisterhood is the strongest part of the film<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honestly, going into the film, I expected it to be a full-on <a href=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/rom-com-movies\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/rom-com-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rom-com<\/a>, and while there are definitely romantic moments, the true heart of this film is sisterhood. <strong>From Sally and Gilly\u2019s bond to the final scene of all the women in the town working together to banish evil, any sort of romantic relationship is secondary to the importance of female friendship and support.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While those townspeople may have done a complete 180 on their views of Sally and Gillian in about 30 seconds, I couldn\u2019t help but smile at how sweet it was to see all of the women working together to banish evil. Female friendships were portrayed so beautifully on screen. I mean, what is witchcraft if not the simple power of what women can accomplish when they work together?<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-practical-magic-home-rivals-those-of-nancy-meyers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The <em>Practical Magic<\/em> home rivals those of Nancy Meyers<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know <a href=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/ranking-nancy-meyers-movies\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/ranking-nancy-meyers-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nancy Meyers<\/a> takes the cake for the gorgeous home interior aesthetic she\u2019s curated throughout her filmography, but honestly, the <em>Practical Magic<\/em> house is giving the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/somethings-gotta-give-beach-house-decor-ideas\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/somethings-gotta-give-beach-house-decor-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Something\u2019s Gotta Give<\/a><\/em> one a run for its money. <strong>The coziness of the Owens sisters\u2019 home is part of the reason I couldn\u2019t look away from the screen. <\/strong>Gorgeous views, greenhouses, and perfectly eclectic decor: The setting could not be more perfect for a witchy watch that somehow resonates years later.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-it-balances-serious-topics-with-levity-so-well\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">It balances serious topics with levity so well<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another misconception I had about this film before watching is that it would be all sunshine and rainbows. I was surprised that <em>Practical Magic<\/em> wasn\u2019t afraid to go darker and address more serious topics than I expected. Domestic violence is central to the plot, and I think it handles the topic with care while still providing the needed moments of levity to keep the film from heading into full-on drama territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also was spookier than I thought it would be! Everything I\u2019d seen about <em>Practical Magic <\/em>talked about the iconic hair of Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock and the fabulous campiness of the film, but it isn\u2019t all coziness and camp. I was definitely watching through my fingers at certain points.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-my-final-takeaways-after-watching-practical-magic-as-an-adult\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">My final takeaways after watching <em>Practical Magic<\/em> as an adult<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Honestly, they just don\u2019t make movies like this anymore.<\/strong> <em>Practical Magic<\/em> has that hard-to-name quality that makes <a href=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/ranking-nora-ephron-movies\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/ranking-nora-ephron-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nora Ephron<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/nancy-meyers-fall-weekend-itinerary\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/theeverygirl.com\/nancy-meyers-fall-weekend-itinerary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nancy Meyers<\/a>\u2019 movies so comforting. It\u2019s chock-full of nostalgia, with messages that still hit deep all these years later.
