In fact, the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ebola-vaccine-sitting-on-shelf-for-15-years\" class=\"text link\">outbreak in Africa<\/a> is among the most concerning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/epidemics\" class=\"text link\">epidemics<\/a> the organization trying to tame it has ever seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cOther than Covid, which affected the whole world, this is the thing that has frightened me the most,\u201d says Nicole Lurie, who has worked for Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations since 2017 and now serves as executive director for preparedness and response and the US director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">More than 7,000 people have contracted the Bundibugyo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/ebola\/\" class=\"text link\">Ebola virus<\/a> in the Democratic Republic of Congo since May, around half of whom have died, according to government data compiled by the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThis is the most rapidly growing Ebola outbreak that we\u2019ve seen. It\u2019s probably on pace to be the worst the world has ever seen,\u201d Lurie tells WIRED, \u201cand it\u2019s quite terrifying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While health officials were able to end the outbreak in Uganda through contact tracing, isolation, and clinical care, instability in the DRC means cases continue to climb. Millions of people have been displaced by ongoing violence, which has made contact tracing a \u201cstruggle,\u201d according to Lurie. Matters have only been made harder by a distrust of outside humanitarian workers, which has made isolating and treating cases difficult. Locals have attacked Red Cross volunteers, destroyed medical equipment including ambulances, and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2026\/08\/1168137\" class=\"text link\">delayed safe burial teams<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019re going to be able to bring this to an end without a vaccine,\u201d Lurie says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Shortly after the first Bundibugyo cases were reported in May, nonprofit CEPI redirected $100 million of internal funding to develop a vaccine. That money helped fund scientists at the Serum Institute of India to manufacture doses of Oxford University\u2019s ChAdOx1 BDBV vaccine at record speed. That and Moderna\u2019s vaccine candidate, also supported by CEPI, have entered safety trials, with efficacy trials expected to start this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Though CEPI sees a vaccine as key to ending the epidemic, it\u2019s likely that any trials, which require contact tracing, will still face challenges in the communities. &#8220;The thing that worries me is vaccine distrust and mistrust,\u201d says vaccinology and immunology professor Teresa Lambe, who is the lead scientific investigator in the Oxford safety trials. \u201cAnd even if we get vaccines that are fabulous, will they be used?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">She had been working on a hantavirus vaccine in May following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/climate-change-next-hantavirus-outbreak\/\" class=\"text link\">cruise ship outbreak<\/a> when her phone lit up with a message from a former WHO employee about Ebola that made her swear out loud. She knew the instability in the DRC could make any Ebola outbreak escape control very rapidly, so she pivoted and kick-started her vaccine drive with philanthropic funding even before CEPI set up support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">&#8220;Covid was in some ways easier,\u201d reflects Lambe, who says she hasn\u2019t taken a day off since May. \u201cWe&#8217;re not in a lockdown, we&#8217;re not in a situation where people even know or care about what&#8217;s going on in the DRC \u2026 You&#8217;re not all pulling in the same direction because day-to-day life continues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Global responder organizations have been short of staff since the US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/trump-plan-to-leave-the-who-health-disaster\/\" class=\"text link\">withdrew from the World Health Organization<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/usaid-whistleblower-says-it-was-even-worse-than-people-knew\/\" class=\"text link\">dismantled USAID<\/a> at the start of President Donald Trump\u2019s second term. His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/us-researchers-ebola-trump-cut-their-funding\/\" class=\"text link\">administration\u2019s cuts to foreign aid<\/a> have also left responders facing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-trumps-aid-cuts-are-fueling-the-ebola-outbreak\/\" class=\"text link\">shortage in basic medical equipment<\/a> like masks, hand sanitizers, and testing gear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The US State Department didn\u2019t respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cCDC teams and partners are strengthening preparedness in the region by supporting surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory diagnostics, infection prevention and control, border health activities, community engagement, and other outbreak containment efforts in coordination with the governments of the DRC, Uganda, and other partners,\u201d Emily Hillard, press secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services, writes in an email.
