{"id":7511,"date":"2026-09-23T12:25:06","date_gmt":"2026-09-23T12:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7511"},"modified":"2026-09-23T12:25:06","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T12:25:06","slug":"startup-power-data-centers-supercritical-co2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7511","title":{"rendered":"A Startup Wants to Power Data Centers With \u2018Supercritical\u2019 Carbon Dioxide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">A new company<\/span> has a plan to make the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/real-reason-data-center-gas-power-plants-are-so-dirty\/\" class=\"text link\">dirty gas turbines<\/a> powering data centers more efficient: liquid carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">American Supercritical came out of stealth Wednesday, announcing $8 million in funding. It wants to retrofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/us-data-centers-drive-gas-power-expansion\/\" class=\"text link\">inefficient gas turbines<\/a> that many data centers rely on for power with units that can generate more power, without adding more emissions (though the gas-fired turbines will continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/data-centers-taking-over-texas-pollution-could-be-catastrophic\/\" class=\"text link\">emit carbon pollution<\/a>). The technology can also theoretically be used on a wide variety of energy sources at a time when power demand is skyrocketing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe want to start with gas turbines but eventually expand beyond that,\u201d says cofounder Simon Shuham.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Most large gas-fired power plants in the United States use an array of heat engines in what\u2019s known as a combined-cycle process: First, turbines generate electricity from burning compressed air and natural gas, then a separate engine uses the hot exhaust to make steam and create additional energy. But for a variety of reasons, data centers across the US have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/elon-musk-spacex-spending-gas-turbines-grok\/\" class=\"text link\">opted to power their operations<\/a> with what are known as simple-cycle turbines, and exclude the steam component.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">These turbines are much less efficient than combined-cycle plants. Usually, only about 35 percent of the energy from simple-cycle turbines is converted to electricity, while the rest escapes as exhaust. (In combined-cycle plants, that figure hovers closer to 60 to 65 percent.) That exhaust includes greenhouse gases, making plants that run on simple-cycle turbines a much worse choice for the environment than combined-cycle plants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The size of some of these plants combined with their inefficiency is a recipe for climate disaster. A massive data-center power plant in Texas that Amazon is building with just simple-cycle turbines, for instance, is permitted to emit more than 33 million tons of greenhouse gases per year\u2014more than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/new-gas-powered-data-centers-could-emit-more-greenhouse-gases-than-entire-nations\/\" class=\"text link\">annual total of some small countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But all these small, inefficient turbines could be a great match for supercritical CO<sub>2<\/sub> technology, American Supercritical\u2019s founders say. Carbon dioxide becomes supercritical when it\u2019s pressurized and held at a certain temperature. In this state, it gets the density of liquid but still behaves like a gas, meaning it can move energy more efficiently through much smaller amounts of equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">American Supercritical wants to attach its units to small gas turbines and help generate more energy. While the turbines themselves would still use gas, the supercritical CO<sub>2<\/sub> unit can use the hot exhaust generated from those turbines to create additional electricity. Instead of using that heat to boil water and create steam, the heat is transferred directly by the pressurized CO<sub>2<\/sub> to generate additional energy with no additional emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe\u2019re essentially building miniature combined-cycle plants,\u201d says Shuham.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Using supercritical CO<sub>2<\/sub> also can eliminate or greatly reduce water use in the power generation process\u2014something that\u2019s drawn intense scrutiny when it comes to data centers. Importantly, the CO<sub>2<\/sub> involved operates in a closed-loop system, meaning that it doesn\u2019t have to be refilled. Cofounder Matthew Carlson, who researched supercritical CO<sub>2<\/sub> for more than a decade, likens it to refrigeration systems that circulate CO<sub>2<\/sub> to facilitate cooling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The company plans to initially sell a 10-megawatt unit\u2014relatively small by gas plant standards. By American Supercritical\u2019s math, adding supercritical CO<sub>2<\/sub> units could increase turbines\u2019 efficiency by up to 50 percent without adding any more greenhouse gas emissions or water use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But retrofitting all of the country\u2019s inefficient gas turbines powering data centers with supercritical CO<sub>2<\/sub> units won\u2019t reduce emissions to zero. Natural gas production and use, even with efficient turbines, warms the planet.
