Part of the job of a content creator is to figure out how to get their work in front of the most people. Cracking \u2014 or fighting \u2014 the algorithm has historically been a frustration for creators, but YouTube is increasingly simply telling creators what they should do.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

At the annual creator-focused Made on YouTube event, the company announced updates to the suite of AI-powered creator tools it unveiled in 2025<\/a>. In its initial iteration, the dashboard of creator tools included things like A\/B testing for video thumbnails and a chatbot interface to query how content was performing. This year\u2019s update adds AI tools for more complex tasks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Perhaps most significantly, YouTube is introducing an AI \u201cagent\u201d that will work in the background to optimize a creator\u2019s channel. For example, the tool will monitor a creator\u2019s back catalog of videos, looking for content that has taken on a new life, is relevant to the news, or has started trending. The agent will offer suggestions for tweaking the thumbnails or titles for older videos to ride the new wave of relevance. The tool can also put together things like pitches for brands by combing through a creator\u2019s YouTube channel and pulling out demographic and audience data to make a case to potential sponsors, says Amjad Hanif, vice president of creator products at YouTube.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The new features iterate on previously existing AI-powered tools. The agent will now generate entire thumbnails and titles based on the content of an uploaded video, and creators can ask the tool for feedback on their own thumbnails. Viewers may also see different content as creators run tests via YouTube Studio: A dynamic thumbnail tool allows creators to upload up to three different images for each video, and YouTube\u2019s system will assign the best one to different audience segments to try to boost watch time. YouTube is taking it a step further, too, by allowing creators to test three different versions of videos \u2014 a clip with a different intro and hook, for example, or with a different structure \u2014 to see how each performs. The different versions of the same video will be fed to small audience segments to test which results in the highest watch time; creators can go forward with the \u201cwinner\u201d to make it the permanent video, or YouTube will automatically do so after seven days. Hanif says the YouTube system ensures the three video versions are not \u201cdramatically different\u201d from one another.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

How content creators use AI has been a hot-button issue in some circles. Earlier this summer, Hank Green angered fans<\/a> when he acknowledged that he had been relying on AI to do research for his videos. (Some observers diagnosed<\/a> Green\u2019s problem as not one specifically about AI, but rather about overwork and burnout in the creator industry.) It\u2019s not just Green who\u2019s had to defend himself: There are countless stories<\/a> of brands<\/a> using or promoting<\/a> AI \u2014 or simply being suspected<\/a> of doing so \u2014 that have spiraled into scandal. For many content creators or public figures, using AI in their work is a reputational risk; is using YouTube\u2019s behind-the-scenes AI tools something they\u2019re worried about? Hanif differentiates between instances where creators are using AI to be more efficient, versus when the tools are doing the actual job of a creator.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhat I\u2019ve heard from creators and what I\u2019ve seen from my own conversations with viewers is that when it feels like it\u2019s not actually from the creator, but the tools have taken over and the tools are producing the content, I think that\u2019s kind of where it crosses the line a bit,\u201d Hanif says. Writing the script, shooting the scenes, wholesale creating the content \u2014 these are the types of AI use that might become a problem for creators and viewers, he says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The real question is what tangible effects this suite of AI tools actually has on creator success. Have views exploded for YouTubers doing A\/B testing? Does using the chatbot to plan or tweak content help creators connect more with what their audiences want to see? I asked YouTube and Hanif if they had data that shows the tools actually improving metrics for the creators who use them, but the company declined to share anything. What it does do, per Hanif, is save creators time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe time that we\u2019ve saved there is time that goes back into the creativity,\u201d Hanif says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
