Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanders.senate.gov\/press-releases\/news-sanders-casar-introduce-legislation-to-create-new-federal-agency-to-ban-artificial-superintelligence-pause-advanced-ai-development\/\">have introduced new legislation<\/a> that would ban anyone from developing artificial superintelligence \u2014 a technology the bill describes as capable of the \u201cdestruction or disempowerment of humanity,\u201d including by overthrowing the government. Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanders.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ban-Artificial-Superintelligence-Act.pdf\">Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act<\/a>, AI leaders would face up to 20 years in prison for violating the law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The bill doesn\u2019t just take aim at the more powerful superintelligence, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/998816\/donald-trump-ai-super-intelligence\">a term President Donald Trump said the US will use in place of \u201cAI\u201d<\/a> in official documents. It would also pause the development of advanced AI systems, which lawmakers classify as frontier models trained on a specific threshold of data. The law would only allow advanced AI development to continue once the government creates a scientist-led Department of Artificial Intelligence to oversee the technology. Along with monitoring frontier AI models, this agency would oversee the removal of dangerous features and \u201csupervise the destruction\u201d of artificial superintelligence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Sanders and Casar\u2019s legislation would also require AI companies to get permission from the Department of AI to develop advanced AI models. If a leader at an AI company violates any of these laws, they could face up to 20 years in prison, \u201cwhich is similar to existing penalties related to unlawfully developing nuclear weapons,\u201d according <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanders.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ban-Artificial-Superintelligence-Act-One-Pager.pdf\">to the bill\u2019s one-pager<\/a>. This penalty would also apply to \u201crogue actors\u201d who break these rules but aren\u2019t employed by an AI company.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cWhen you are racing towards a cliff, you don\u2019t just ease up on the gas pedal.
