Those warnings are predicated on the idea that\u2014propelled by ferocious competition and a rivalry between the US and China\u2014labs are barreling toward superintelligent models whose abilities will far surpass those of humans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But according to Father Paolo Benanti, a priest who advises the Catholic Church on AI, the handwaving over superintelligence distracts from the need for open debate about how to constrain the companies building the technology. By casting the problem as so complex that only they can solve it, he says, the big labs exclude everyone else from the conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cEthics cannot be something that belongs to the board of trustees of a company. It\u2019s something that has to be balanced, mitigated in debate in the public square.\u201d Benanti tells WIRED. \u201cWe need democratic regulation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In an <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/darioamodei.com\/post\/we-must-pace-the-frontier\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/darioamodei.com\/post\/we-must-pace-the-frontier&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/darioamodei.com\/post\/we-must-pace-the-frontier\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">essay<\/a> published on the heels of the safety warnings, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for new AI models to undergo mandatory third-party evaluations prior to release, and some sort of crackdown on distillation, a process where rival labs train their own AI on the outputs of proprietary models. Others have <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/20\/opinion\/ai-ban-self-improvement-recursive-models.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/20\/opinion\/ai-ban-self-improvement-recursive-models.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/20\/opinion\/ai-ban-self-improvement-recursive-models.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">argued for a total ban on recursive self-improvement<\/a>, where AI uses its advanced coding capabilities to help develop future iterations of itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Benanti is less interested in restricting methods for developing AI, which he fears could quash innovation, and more so in establishing standards that ensure models cannot slip from human control. Whatever shape those standards take, he says, they should not be designed by the labs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe narrative of the frontier labs is self-interested, to gain or maintain a position in the market,\u201d says Benanti. When a small group of companies dictates the rules under which an industry operates, he says, \u201cthis has a really clear name: a cartel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It\u2019s difficult to know how seriously to take grand pronouncements about the capabilities of the latest and future AI models, says Benanti, owing to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/one-of-ais-fiercest-critics-says-all-the-doom-talk-is-meant-to-distract-us\/\" class=\"text link\">overlapping economic, political, and personal incentives<\/a> at play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While both OpenAI and Anthropic have <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/sep\/13\/openai-sam-altman-elon-musk-back-anthropic-calls-brakes-ai-development\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/sep\/13\/openai-sam-altman-elon-musk-back-anthropic-calls-brakes-ai-development&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/sep\/13\/openai-sam-altman-elon-musk-back-anthropic-calls-brakes-ai-development\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supported calls for a slowdown<\/a> in development, they\u2019re also preparing to go public, and there are many billions of dollars at stake for whoever captures the market. The animosity between the US and China, where the most advanced AI models are being developed, also complicates the picture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Anthropic declined to comment. OpenAI and Google DeepMind did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Benanti also takes issue with the way certain corners of the AI industry <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/openai-chief-scientist-agi-animals\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/openai-chief-scientist-agi-animals&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/openai-chief-scientist-agi-animals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">talk about<\/a> superintelligence, with the kind of reverence typically reserved for a god: as sophisticated beyond our understanding, practically omnipotent. (OpenAI CEO Sam Altman once said he aspires to build a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/dd9ba2f6-f509-42f0-8e97-4271c7b84ded\" class=\"text link\">magic intelligence in the sky<\/a>.\u201d) That kind of framing, Benanti says, threatens to skew the discourse about the technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAre we talking about some-<em>thing<\/em>, or some-<em>one<\/em>? This is the real difference. It\u2019s not a matter of faith, it\u2019s a matter of mathematics,\u201d he says. \u201cWe are not building the next divinity.
