After reporting on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" class=\"text link\">artificial intelligence<\/a> for years, I was curious about what the technology could do for me. I had imagined Cowork as a hyper-capable digital assistant, but was let down to discover that it was more like interacting with a regular chatbot, albeit one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/why-normal-people-arent-using-ai-agents\/\" class=\"text link\">with extra tools<\/a>. What did I want it to do? I had no idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Then Instinct, an invite-only AI agent that communicates with users through iMessage and WhatsApp, started popping off in the Bay Area. It connects to your email, calendar, and messaging apps. Think of it as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/malevolent-ai-agent-openclaw-clawdbot\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenClaw<\/a> for normies. The company, which launched in private beta in February, is <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/ai-agent-startup-instinct-talks-10-billion-valuation\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/ai-agent-startup-instinct-talks-10-billion-valuation&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/ai-agent-startup-instinct-talks-10-billion-valuation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly in talks<\/a> to raise $1 billion on top of the $350 million it\u2019s already raised, bringing its valuation to $10 billion, according to The Information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Instinct\u2019s moment in the spotlight comes as Meta is experiencing its own unexpected burst of popularity thanks to Muse, an AI assistant the tech giant launched earlier this month. As of writing, Muse is the most popular free app in Apple\u2019s App Store, with more than 900,000 downloads, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/metas-muse-is-better-at-surveilling-than-helping-me\/\" class=\"text link\">according to third-party estimates<\/a>. The commentator class on X seems genuinely excited about it, despite the fact that it rolled out with a serious security vulnerability that would have \u201clet attackers do \u2018whatever\u2019 they wanted on a victim\u2019s Mac,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/metas-muse-ai-agent-zero-day\/\" class=\"text link\">according to Ars Technica<\/a>. I\u2019m not about to give Meta a ton of my personal information, but if Muse can keep me logged into Bloomberg or unsubscribe me from Hot Yoga S\u00e3o Paulo, which has been emailing me once a week since 2017, I\u2019ll reconsider.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">Agent Provocateur<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The divide between people who use AI agents for everything and those who have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/why-normal-people-arent-using-ai-agents\/\" class=\"text link\">never tried one<\/a> has never been wider. It explains, in part, why tech CEOs were largely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/silicon-valley-doesnt-get-why-you-hate-ai\/\" class=\"text link\">caught off guard<\/a> by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-data-centers-broke-american-politics\/\" class=\"text link\">data center backlash<\/a>. If you think agents can automate the majority of people\u2019s administrative drudgery and turbocharge their productivity, the costs and disruptions associated with building data centers might look like an acceptable trade-off. But if you\u2019re using chatbots as a fancy form of Google, that deal is probably much less appealing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The overarching problem, as <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/jasmi.news\/p\/claude-code\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/jasmi.news\/p\/claude-code&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/jasmi.news\/p\/claude-code\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">technology journalist Jasmine Sun<\/a> writes, is that \u201cmost people\u2019s problems are not software-shaped, and most won\u2019t notice even when they are.\u201d AI agents, like chatbots, still require a lot of input and direction from users. If you know what you want\u2014<a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/openai-chatgpt-ai-cheating-education-college-students-school.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/openai-chatgpt-ai-cheating-education-college-students-school.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/openai-chatgpt-ai-cheating-education-college-students-school.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">help with your homework<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/couples-retreat-with-3-ai-chatbots-and-humans-who-love-them-replika-nomi-chatgpt\/\" class=\"text link\">virtual girlfriend<\/a>\u2014the tools are eager to provide. But if you don\u2019t, well, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/30\/opinion\/ai-labor-work-force-silicon-valley.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/30\/opinion\/ai-labor-work-force-silicon-valley.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/30\/opinion\/ai-labor-work-force-silicon-valley.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">welcome to the permanent underclass<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I was eager to avoid such a fate. I may not be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/silicon-valley-agentic-individuals-future-of-work\/\" class=\"text link\">agentic<\/a>, but I like to think I\u2019m action-oriented. Surely I could identify a software-shaped problem in my life. I had used Claude previously to generate a few freelance invoices, saving me approximately 10 minutes. It was nice, but not life-changing. I decided to give Instinct a try.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">If you talk to AI researchers about Instinct, you\u2019ll hear the phrase \u201cform factor\u201d a lot. Instinct got the form factor right\u2014no open text box, just iMessage, WhatsApp, and a few helpful prompts. It\u2019s hard to overstate how important this is. Rather than trying to figure out for yourself how to make the chat experience more useful, you\u2019re texting with an agent that\u2019s suggesting things it can do for you, and then actually doing them. And unlike other agents in this space, it doesn\u2019t text too much.
