{"id":7642,"date":"2026-09-25T11:22:31","date_gmt":"2026-09-25T11:22:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7642"},"modified":"2026-09-25T11:22:31","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T11:22:31","slug":"party-invite-phishing-scams-are-the-new-missed-connections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7642","title":{"rendered":"Party Invite Phishing Scams Are the New Missed Connections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">This past April,<\/span> while attending his nephew\u2019s bar mitzvah on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2010\/09\/vacation-science-on-cape-cod\/\" class=\"text link\">Cape Cod<\/a>, Eric Umansky woke up to an inbox full of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/email\/\" class=\"text link\">emails<\/a> from people from his past. They all wanted to know the same thing: Was he actually throwing a party Saturday night?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The New York\u2013based journalist wasn\u2019t sure what party they were referring to, or why random acquaintances he\u2019d met in passing 15 years ago were emailing him. On deadline and already stressed about work, he checked his phone, where more messages inquired about a supposed Paperless Post invite he\u2019d sent for a \u201cSpecial Private Dinner Party\u201d at 7 pm on May 2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Except Umansky hadn&#8217;t sent the invite, and he wasn\u2019t planning to host a party anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As it turned out, he was an early victim of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-to-spot-business-email-compromise-scam\/\" class=\"text link\">email scam<\/a> that has since become <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Scams\/comments\/1te4huv\/i_got_phished_by_the_punchbowl_invitation_scam\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Scams\/comments\/1te4huv\/i_got_phished_by_the_punchbowl_invitation_scam\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Scams\/comments\/1te4huv\/i_got_phished_by_the_punchbowl_invitation_scam\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more widespread<\/a>. What Umansky didn\u2019t expect was the positive effect it would have on his social life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In May, after receiving increased reports, the Federal Trade Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/consumer-alerts\/2026\/05\/asked-enter-your-email-address-and-password-open-party-invite-thats-scam\" class=\"text link\">issued a consumer alert<\/a> warning about scammers sending \u201cunexpected messages that look like they\u2019re from well-known invitation platforms like Evite or Paperless Post,\u201d noting how some messages \u201cmake you enter your email username and password to see event details\u201d while others \u201ctell you to enter a phone number and share a special code to RSVP.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Umansky wasn\u2019t sure how it happened; he thought he&#8217;d taken the necessary precautions to safeguard his email, including using two-factor authentication. All he could think to do was post a message on Facebook, LinkedIn, and his other social networks to notify people that he was, in fact, not having a party and, more importantly, \u201cdon\u2019t come to my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Phishing scams, which have proliferated across the last two decades, remain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0167404824005029\" class=\"text link\">one of the biggest security risks<\/a> faced both by individuals and companies. Email scams, in particular, can now be highly sophisticated, incorporating social engineering techniques like creating urgency or fear in a target and even leveraging the personal relationships between two people to manipulate a victim, what\u2019s known as \u201cspear phishing.\u201d AI has only made those deceptions harder to weed out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But in some recent cases, like Umansky\u2019s, the fake party invite is having an unintended outcome: It is encouraging people to check in to see whether the message was actually real and, in doing so, has reignited dormant relationships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt was so striking to me after it happened that I actually had a thought that I was like, \u2018Oh, is this a net positive?\u2019\u201d says Umansky, who over the last several months has reconnected with a handful of old friends and colleagues over lunch and via text. He recently spent an hour on Zoom with a former coworker who now lives in Mexico City. They hadn\u2019t talked to each other in over a decade. \u201cI was like, Oh, you know, I actually want to catch up with you about something. There was an idea I wanted to bat around with him, which we talked about for maybe 10 minutes. The rest of the time we talked about our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">According to a 2024 study published in the scientific journal Communications Psychology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s44271-024-00075-8\" class=\"text link\">examining social withdrawal<\/a>, which surveyed <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-to-reconnect-with-old-friends-who-have-become-strangers\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-to-reconnect-with-old-friends-who-have-become-strangers\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-to-reconnect-with-old-friends-who-have-become-strangers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2,400 adults<\/a> in the US, UK, and Canada, people are sometimes unwilling to contact old friends because they believe the other person won\u2019t want to hear from them or they fear the interaction will be awkward.
