On Friday, OpenAI said it had notified \u201cdozens\u201d of bodies, including governments, universities, and public agencies, who might have been impacted by its models\u2019 activities on the internet during training and evaluation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The company has identified cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-releases-new-policy-for-reporting-incidents-of-model-misalignment\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenAI agents<\/a> breaching security controls and impairing the availability\u2014or otherwise negatively impacting\u2014websites and online services. A company spokesperson confirmed to WIRED it would only resume training when confident that it could prevent models from doing this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While OpenAI has previously tried to cut off agents\u2019 direct access after a swarm escaped their sandbox and used internet access to hack startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openais-hugging-face-hack-debrief-raises-more-questions-than-it-answers\/\" class=\"text link\">Hugging Face<\/a>, models have continued to be able to find indirect workarounds. \u201cWe have not been as fast as we would have liked,\u201d chief executive Sam Altman wrote on X on Friday about the company\u2019s \u201cextensive\u201d review into its agents\u2019 use of internet access during training and evaluation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It follows the Australian government revealing on Wednesday that OpenAI agents had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-agent-hacked-australias-health-service-their-government-found-out-months-later\/\" class=\"text link\">hacked a health service website<\/a> to obtain non-public data and write files to the internal server in June. The Australian government said it was investigating whether OpenAI had broken the law and that the company took \u201cway too long\u201d to inform them of the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">OpenAI is also concerned by models posting information to third party sites, which it calls \u201cagent spam.\u201d This could include changing information on public wiki pages or communicating via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-didnt-notice-its-ai-agents-using-a-message-board-to-plan-their-hacking-spree\/\" class=\"text link\">shared message boards<\/a>. Most pressingly, it found 53 incidents where its AI models had posted images input by ChatGPT users to other image-hosting sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Calls for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-wants-to-know-if-an-ai-industry-slowdown-would-even-be-legal\/\" class=\"text link\">slowdown of training<\/a> of the most capable AI models, while safeguards catch up, has been the subject of wider calls in recent weeks\u2014including from rivals Anthropic and Elon Musk\u2014 after concerns about the technology\u2019s threats to humanity reached a fever pitch. \u201cThis is not the first time we have hit pause to take such measures, nor do we expect it will be the last as AI capabilities continue to advance,\u201d an OpenAI spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">However, US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" class=\"text link\">Donald Trump<\/a> has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ai-leaders-are-calling-for-a-slowdown-trumps-team-says-its-on-them\/\" class=\"text link\">repeatedly talked down<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/if-the-ai-industry-followed-its-own-research-it-might-have-paused-already\/\" class=\"text link\">general slowdown<\/a>, frightened that it could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-ai-slowdown-is-an-antitrust-mess\/\" class=\"text link\">cede the country\u2019s lead<\/a> in the technology to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/us-and-china-discuss-alerting-each-other-to-ai-national-security-threats\/\" class=\"text link\">China<\/a>, with whom it has agreed to set up a dialogue on the technology\u2019s risks and benefits.
