World Labs launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/7\/17\/24200496\/ai-fei-fei-li-world-labs-andreessen-horowitz-radical-ventures\">in 2024<\/a> and was valued at $1 billion in a matter of months. The startup launched its first commercial product, a world generation model called Marble that lets users make interactive 3D worlds from a prompt, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/820016\/world-labs-is-betting-on-world-generation-as-the-next-ai-frontier\">in 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The deal is expected to close by the end of the year. Li will become EVP and chief scientist at AMD, reporting to AMD CEO Lisa Su, while the World Labs team will \u201ccontinue to focus on advancing AI model research.\u201d AMD also notes that the acquisition will strengthen \u201cits ability to develop AI hardware, software and systems around the needs of emerging models and applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cJust like I knew it was time to do a startup to jumpstart the work of creating foundation models beyond LLMs and achieve the most impact in AI, it\u2019s again very clear that the right path for myself and World Labs is to continue our mission as a part of AMD,\u201d Li says in <a href=\"https:\/\/drfeifei.substack.com\/p\/worldlabs-joining-amd\">a post on her Substack<\/a>. \u201cTogether we\u2019re committed to keep pushing the frontier of AI to solve real problems, and doing so openly with the community and the entire ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cBuilding the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving,\u201d Su says in a statement. \u201cFei-Fei and the World Labs team bring exceptional research leadership and model expertise.
