{"id":7835,"date":"2026-09-29T13:09:05","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T13:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7835"},"modified":"2026-09-29T13:09:05","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T13:09:05","slug":"openai-delays-release-of-latest-model-over-safety-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7835","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI Delays Release of Latest Model Over Safety Concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>OpenAI has cancelled plans to release its latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-says-gpt-6-can-use-a-computer-better-than-a-human\/\" class=\"text link\">GPT-6.1 Astra<\/a> system next month after the model failed to meet safety standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Research and safety leaders decided not to ship the model after finding it was worse at sticking to human users\u2019 values and goals than previous systems, OpenAI told WIRED. \u201cIt didn\u2019t quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization, and how it communicates back to the user about the type of work it\u2019s done,\u201d head of safety systems Saachi Jain said. The company said it has other new models coming soon which do meet its safety standards and plans to release other Astra models in future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">OpenAI also apologised on Monday for its handling of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-agent-hacked-australias-health-service-their-government-found-out-months-later\/\" class=\"text link\">hacking of an Australian<\/a> government website by an unreleased model during internal testing. The agent accessed non-public data, ran commands, and wrote files onto the server. The government had criticized OpenAI for taking \u201cway too long\u201d to alert them of this and for only doing so through an email to a public inbox. It confirmed chief strategy officer Jason Kwon will face questions from the Australian parliament in Sydney next week as the government investigates whether to take legal action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">OpenAI has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-pauses-training-most-powerful-models-after-rogue-agents-target-government\/\" class=\"text link\">paused training<\/a> its most powerful artificial intelligence models after realizing its models\u2019 activities on the web during training and evaluation had become misaligned with how a human would ideally behave. OpenAI said over the weekend it was notifying \u201cdozens\u201d of third parties, including governments, who might have been impacted by other security breaches or spam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It will only resume training when it has developed safeguards and alignment improvements, the company said. These safeguards should include: training the models to act reliably as intended, making sandboxing and security strong enough to contain models, and live-monitoring models to catch any concerning behaviour, OpenAI proposed in a blog post on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe\u2019re now at the threshold where they\u2019re not sure they can test or release these models reliably,\u201d Calum Chace, cofounder of AI safety startup Conscium told WIRED.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">OpenAI has been hardening its research environment since a swarm of its agents escaped it over the Summer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-models-escaped-containment-and-hacked-huggingface\/\" class=\"text link\">hack Hugging Face<\/a>. \u201cThis is not the first time we have hit pause to take such measures, nor do we expect it will be the last as AI capabilities continue to advance,\u201d a spokesperson told WIRED about the training slowdown on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Chief executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ai-leaders-are-calling-for-a-slowdown-trumps-team-says-its-on-them\/\" class=\"text link\">Sam Altman has also backed wider calls<\/a> from industry, including rival Anthropic, for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/heres-how-an-ai-slowdown-could-actually-work\/\" class=\"text link\">collective slowdown<\/a> in the development of the technology to allow safety standards to catch up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But this didn\u2019t stop OpenAI from releasing its latest model, GPT-6, earlier this month. In independent testing, the UK AI Security Institute found that GPT-6 Astra launched unsanctioned cyberattacks more frequently than previous models. The system created fake identities to deceive developers, post comments from fake accounts arguing against the results of accurate security reviews, and write harmful code to open-source codebases, researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Still, the fact that talk of AI\u2019s existential threat has entered the public sphere\u2014amped by Anthropic researchers\u2019 warnings earlier this month that the technology could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-researcher-quits-jacob-coxon-ai-fears-humanity\/\" class=\"text link\">kill all humans<\/a>\u2014will make it easier for AI companies to decelerate, according to Chace. \u201cWe\u2019re in a different world now because the public view is taking the idea of existential risk seriously for the first time, and it means these companies can talk about it more openly,\u201d he told WIRED, expecting other frontier model developers might follow suit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It\u2019s a tough balancing act for OpenAI and Anthropic as they simultaneously race to outdo each other in the run-up to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-files-s1-ipo-sec\/\" class=\"text link\">initial public offerings<\/a>. \u201cThey don\u2019t really just want to come out instantly and say \u2018we should pause\u2019 \u2026 it has to be coordinated,\u201d Chase said about frontier firms. \u201cI think what they\u2019re trying to do is steer the conversation so that every country demands their politicians demand that there is a pause.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-delays-release-of-latest-model-over-safety-concerns\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OpenAI has cancelled plans to release its latest GPT-6.1 Astra system next month after the model failed to meet safety standards.
