The US executive branch is no longer acknowledging the existence of \u201cartificial intelligence.\u201d Going forward, official policy websites, policy documents, and press releases will refer only to \u201cSuper Intelligence,\u201d thanks to a new executive order<\/a> signed by President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe word super is the best word of all, and it\u2019s the simplest,\u201d Trump said at an event announcing the launch of America.gov<\/a> earlier on Tuesday, and said Chinese President Xi Jinping, who visited the White House last week, \u201cloves it\u201d too. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to hear artificial. Because it\u2019s not artificial. It\u2019s very powerful, it\u2019s very brilliant. It\u2019s going to mostly be put to good use and we\u2019ll stop the bad use.\u201d Artificial, he added, \u201cis like the news. Fake news.\u201d He first mentioned plans for the rebrand<\/a> in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly last week, aiming to quell fears over AI advancing too quickly and posing a safety risk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Executive agencies won\u2019t have to change past regulations or documents, but it could still constitute a real (and very strange) shift. Superintelligence is one of several industry terms for particularly powerful versions of artificial intelligence, but the Trump administration is seeking to use the term as a replacement for a broader statutory definition<\/a> of AI. US officials will be expected not to even acknowledge the use of the terms \u201cartificial intelligence\u201d or \u201cAI\u201d in relevant settings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Trump signed the executive order after a luncheon he hosted at the White House with tech CEOs and government officials to discuss what he\u2019s now officially calling Super Intelligence. In brief public remarks<\/a> after the meeting, flanked by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, and surrounded by other attendees, Trump called the lunch \u201cvery productive\u201d and \u201cextremely friendly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a belief that there should be tremendous self-regulation,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnd we automatically have regulation with the Department of Justice, the FBI, all of that.\u201d On the local level, where tech companies have faced the most hurdles in building out massive data centers needed to run their services, Trump says the firms will \u201cwork to make the community happy\u201d by providing resources and economic support they may need. Ultimately, he says, \u201cdata centers are going to be very popular.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
