{"id":7884,"date":"2026-09-30T10:42:07","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T10:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7884"},"modified":"2026-09-30T10:42:07","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T10:42:07","slug":"threads-is-black-twitters-unlikely-spiritual-successor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7884","title":{"rendered":"Black Twitter Is Thriving\u2014on Threads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Last week, after<\/span> a Mississippi grand jury declined to bring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/crime\/\" class=\"text link\">criminal<\/a> charges in the death of Nolan Wells, the 18-year-old Black <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/college\/\" class=\"text link\">college<\/a> student who disappeared on Horn Island while traveling with a group of white friends and was later found dead, Black users on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/threads\/\" class=\"text link\">Threads<\/a> demanded justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cJust so it\u2019s abundantly clear: The state of Mississippi is covering up the murder of Nolan Wells,\u201d user <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@_taexoxo\/post\/DdnRnK2DhfR\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@_taexoxo\/post\/DdnRnK2DhfR&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@_taexoxo\/post\/DdnRnK2DhfR\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@_taexoxo<\/a> posted two days after the September 21 decision. The case has incited racial tensions nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThis year a grand jury handed down an indictment for a pool of water turning green, but didn\u2019t indict when a black kid was found floating face down in water!\u201d commented comedian <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@realdlhughley\/post\/Dd1IElEm0I2\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@realdlhughley\/post\/Dd1IElEm0I2&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@realdlhughley\/post\/Dd1IElEm0I2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">D.L. Hughley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Black Americans have never shied away from calling out America\u2019s racial hypocrisies\u2014Twitter served as an indispensable tool as the Black Lives Matter movement swelled in the 2020s\u2014but the chatter on Threads was uniquely charged for Wells. It was the latest bit of evidence showing that the platform has emerged as a vital artery of the Black social media ecosystem, at times even rivaling the influence Black Twitter once embodied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In 2021, when I first explored the cultural expansiveness of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/black-twitter-oral-history-part-i-coming-together\/\" class=\"text link\">Black Twitter<\/a>, I wrote that it was \u201call the things: news and analysis, call and response, judge and jury\u2014a comedy showcase, therapy session, and family cookout all in one.\u201d Five years later, Threads is proving to be its spiritual successor, a robust digital universe where no conversation, no matter how ugly or awkward, is off limits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As with Black Twitter, on Threads you are just as likely to come across conversations around the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@yagirlkat\/post\/DdzPyFTiT_5\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@yagirlkat\/post\/DdzPyFTiT_5&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@yagirlkat\/post\/DdzPyFTiT_5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ageism double standard<\/a> that Black women face as you are off-the-cuff TV commentary. Speaking of HBO Max\u2019s new superhero thriller, <em>Lanterns,<\/em> <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@comicbookbullies\/post\/Dd0PwubjsK8\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@comicbookbullies\/post\/Dd0PwubjsK8&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@comicbookbullies\/post\/Dd0PwubjsK8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one user recently commented<\/a> that it\u2019s the first sci-fi show \u201cwith a black Chosen One and a white Magical Negro.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe heyday of Twitter was during the Obama era. Now we\u2019re living through the second Trump administration. Having a place to laugh to keep from crying is just as important as it ever was,\u201d <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamilahlemieux\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamilahlemieux&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamilahlemieux\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jamilah Lemieux<\/a>, a cultural critic and author who has 208,000 followers on the Meta-run platform, tells WIRED.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Lemieux was active on Twitter for over a decade, where she discussed motherhood and women\u2019s rights, but started to pull back because the level of harassment and vitriol she was getting started to outweigh her positive interactions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Twitter underwent a noticeable vibe shift in 2022 after Elon Musk bought the platform and renamed it X. For day-one users, the app was less functional: It was harder to see the content you wanted, hate speech and propaganda accounts surged, and moderation seemed to disappear overnight. \u201cI\u2019m not surprised that that happened. It was a very deliberate shift away from the progressive Black voices that had defined the platform for its earlier history,\u201d says Lemieux, who describes the current experience of posting on X as \u201cscreaming into the void.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Lemieux has since decamped to Threads, where she has become a power user of sorts, riffing on everything from singer <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamilahlemieux\/post\/DdbsUbNmyp-\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamilahlemieux\/post\/DdbsUbNmyp-&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamilahlemieux\/post\/DdbsUbNmyp-\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Brown<\/a> to <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamilahlemieux\/post\/Ddh_appmrFV\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamilahlemieux\/post\/Ddh_appmrFV&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamilahlemieux\/post\/Ddh_appmrFV\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">public versus private education<\/a>. \u201cI wanted a social media home again, but I just wasn&#8217;t really sure where I fit. I have always preferred text to video in terms of the creation.
