{"id":7903,"date":"2026-09-30T17:00:29","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T17:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7903"},"modified":"2026-09-30T17:00:29","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T17:00:29","slug":"asus-escape-us-router-ban-us-manufacturing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7903","title":{"rendered":"Asus won\u2019t say how it escaped the US router ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">This spring, the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/899906\/fcc-router-ban-march-2026-explainer\">banned all future foreign-made consumer routers<\/a> \u2014 effectively <em>all<\/em> future routers \u2014 unless their makers could 1) convince the US government that they weren\u2019t a national security threat, and 2) submit \u201ca detailed, time-bound plan to establish or expand manufacturing in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/document\/fcc-announces-conditional-approvals-certain-routers-and-robots\">As of September 9th,<\/a> Asus now has an exemption from the ban, just in time to bring <a href=\"https:\/\/press.asus.com\/news\/press-releases\/rog-rapture-gt-bn98-wifi-8-router-canada-availability\/\">its first early Wi-Fi 8 routers<\/a> here. But Asus has not publicly announced any plan to bring manufacturing to the US. It would not even confirm to <em>The Verge<\/em> whether it had submitted a US manufacturing plan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Initially, Asus spokesperson JJ Guerrero forwarded the following statement to <em>The Verge<\/em>: \u201cASUS has submitted the required plan to the FCC and is working with trusted manufacturing partners to support our future networking product portfolio in the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">But when we repeatedly asked Asus to clarify whether that meant it had submitted a plan to manufacture equipment<em> in<\/em> the United States \u2014 as opposed to equipment that\u2019s just <em>for<\/em> the United States \u2014 the company did not answer. We\u2019ve been waiting over 12 days without clarification.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The US router ban is not about security, despite the government\u2019s claims. The FCC doesn\u2019t ask companies a single question about security to get an exemption from the ban; it\u2019s more about where routers are made. Nor is the FCC carefully testing which products are safe and which might have security holes \u2014 it has granted Asus a blanket exemption on <em>all <\/em>future routers through March 2028.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Few consumer products are made in the United States these days for all kinds of economic reasons. Even a copy of the board game <em>Monopoly<\/em> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/1001819\/the-struggle-to-make-things-in-america\">now difficult to manufacture domestically<\/a>. It wouldn\u2019t be surprising if Asus wants to avoid building factories here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">But if the US router ban is not about US manufacturing, and it\u2019s not about security, what is it actually about? Why did the Trump administration suddenly give Asus a blanket exemption, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/911888\/netgear-router-ban-conditional-approval\">why did it give Netgear<\/a> a similar blanket exemption back in April?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The FCC did not respond to a request for comment then, and it has not responded to our fact-check request for this story. Perhaps it\u2019s simply satisfied that these companies aren\u2019t making them in China; both Asus and Netgear claim they\u2019re manufacturing in countries that are considered US allies, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pjatr.com\/t\/8-12647-88849-242813?website=557972&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.netgear.com%2Frouter-security-standards-fcc-netgear-faq%2F\" rel=\"sponsored\">Netgear additionally says<\/a> that \u201cwe no longer procure internet-connected components from manufacturers in China, or entities owned or controlled by China.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Publicly, both Asus and Netgear are using the US government\u2019s exemptions as marketing tools. In April, Netgear even emailed existing customers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pjatr.com\/t\/8-12647-88849-242813?website=557972&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.netgear.com%2Fletter-from-the-ceo-fcc-conditional-approval%2F%23%3A~%3Atext%3Din%2520March%25202026%252C%2520the%2520FCC%2520called%2520for%2520stronger%2520safety%2520and%2520security%2520standards%2520for%2520consumer%2520routers\" rel=\"sponsored\">to share the news<\/a> that Netgear is a \u201ctrusted consumer router company\u201d now.
