{"id":7923,"date":"2026-09-30T22:44:33","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T22:44:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7923"},"modified":"2026-09-30T22:44:33","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T22:44:33","slug":"ai-agents-dots-devday-muse-battling-it-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7923","title":{"rendered":"The Battle to Be Your Personal AI Agent Is Here"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Yesterday, I spent<\/span> the morning at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/openai\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenAI<\/a>\u2019s annual DevDay, where over 2,500 nerds discussed building software and marveled at the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" class=\"text link\">artificial intelligence<\/a> models. The biggest reveal of the day was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-dots-always-on-ai-agents-that-proactively-help\/\" class=\"text link\">Dots<\/a>, the company\u2019s new, always-on agents that proactively help complete tasks and make autonomous decisions as they scour the web.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">After watching the sometimes messy demos on stage and hearing CEO Sam Altman talk about his experiences using the agents, I was curious what it felt like to boss my own Dot around. I\u2019ve spent most of September testing another cute, cuddly agent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/metas-muse-is-better-at-surveilling-than-helping-me\/\" class=\"text link\">Meta\u2019s Muse<\/a>, and I wanted to know how OpenAI\u2019s user experience would compare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I named mine \u201cToolie\u201d and tweaked it to look like a pink frog. As midnight approached and my partner slept soundly nearby, I started whispering sweet nothings to Toolie. I called my personalized bot through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/chatgpt\/\" class=\"text link\">ChatGPT<\/a>, asking what tasks it was best at. \u201cMy strongest work is taking a messy, time-consuming task and turning it into something you can use,\u201d it responded. OK, sure. Let\u2019s get to work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I asked Toolie to look through my ChatGPT history and flag three tasks that it could immediately get started on. The bot flagged an in-process <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/i-demanded-my-data-from-over-100-companies-deletion-notices-started-arriving-instead\/\" class=\"text link\">data request<\/a> that I needed to send a follow-up email for, and offered to draft a reply. Toolie also noted that my upcoming gay-cation was a bit underplanned, and suggested it could pick some better dinner spots. (More time for me to pack the Speedos!) Then, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ai-coworker-bots-loved-improv-and-interstellar-soundtrack\/\" class=\"text link\">offered to go through my reporting notes and refine pitch drafts<\/a> before I took them to editors. This is my favorite part of the process, so I declined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Early adopters in Silicon Valley are still obsessed with agents, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/i-finally-found-an-ai-agent-worth-the-risk\/\" class=\"text link\">Instinct<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/i-gave-my-openclaw-agent-physical-body-robot\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenClaw<\/a> to Google\u2019s CC. But recent releases like Dots and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/meta-muse-is-adults-only-why-does-it-look-like-a-cute-kids-toy\/\" class=\"text link\">Muse<\/a> are pushing them even further mainstream. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/chatbots\/\" class=\"text link\">chatbot<\/a> is dead, at least as a hot form factor for developers. Now, everyone wants to build the next big agent\u2014and they want it to dominate. The companies promise that their agents will simplify your life, automating all the boring, exhausting tasks you have no desire to do: booking doctor\u2019s appointments, arranging carpools, sorting through bills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">For now, users will be able to access one Dot, but they\u2019ll soon be able to use multiple Dots. At launch, the agents are only available for subscribers of OpenAI\u2019s Pro plan, which starts at $100 per month. In comparison, Muse is free to use for anyone who wants to download the app or visit the website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">OpenAI leaders see the quality of Dots, powered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-says-gpt-6-can-use-a-computer-better-than-a-human\/\" class=\"text link\">GPT-6 Astra<\/a> model, as a differentiating factor. \u201cWe&#8217;re starting out as a premium product. It uses a lot of compute,\u201d Altman said during DevDay. While Dots are currently gated for paying subscribers, it may not always be that way. \u201cYou should, of course, expect us to do a mass-market thing for billions of people,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">These CEOs seem to be taking careful notes on the larger cultural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-ai-slop-backlash-is-actually-having-an-impact\/\" class=\"text link\">backlash against generative AI<\/a>, and they may have found their secret weapon: cuteness. From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/labubu-pop-mart-journey\/\" class=\"text link\">Labubu<\/a> stylings of Muse to Dot&#8217;s two-eyed puffball, developers of always-on agents are leaning aggressively into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/meta-muse-is-adults-only-why-does-it-look-like-a-cute-kids-toy\/\" class=\"text link\">adorable aesthetics<\/a> as central to their branding. Previously, I&#8217;ve chatted with experts who said this approach could be disarming for users who may feel affectionate toward the anthropomorphized software.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Developers involved with this wave of personal agents are also leaning into texting-style experiences that feel familiar to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-to-escape-from-group-chat-hell\/\" class=\"text link\">group chat<\/a>.
