{"id":7992,"date":"2026-10-02T01:28:40","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T01:28:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7992"},"modified":"2026-10-02T01:28:40","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T01:28:40","slug":"the-secrets-of-the-us-spyware-king","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=7992","title":{"rendered":"The Secrets of the US Spyware King"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Rather than see Paragon\u2019s lack of access to logs as an accountability problem, however, Boyd describes it as a selling point: No one would buy their products if the company could see a customer\u2019s sensitive targeting information or logs that contain it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThere&#8217;s a balancing act between privacy and security and being able to ensure that our customers are using these things correctly,\u201d Boyd says. \u201cAnd I think we&#8217;ve landed on the best balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That balance is achieved mostly through careful vetting of customers, he says, and rejecting any country that might be prone to abusing the spyware.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">John Scott-Railton, senior researcher at Citizen Lab, which has tracked government misuse of commercial spyware for years, calls the revelations astonishing and the lack of mandatory logging \u201creckless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWhat Paragon is saying in several substantial ways means [it has] less oversight, less transparency, less contractual protection against abuses than NSO Group,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s exactly the opposite of the picture that Paragon has painted for itself for years. The CEO admitting that his customers won\u2019t tolerate oversight is refreshing honesty: Accountability is bad for business. And it signals to lawmakers and regulators that the spyware industry cannot be trusted to self-regulate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Scott-Railton also finds it ironic that Paragon relies on Citizen Lab and others to uncover customer misuse when Paragon actively works to hide its spyware on infected devices and prevent discovery\u2014which inherently includes potential misuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe only find a very, very, very small subset [of infections], and the total numbers are always larger,\u201d Scott-Railton says. \u201cThese companies spend millions trying to hide from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">US senator Ron Wyden tells WIRED that surveillance tools that lack oversight and transparency are \u201cinevitably abused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt\u2019s easy to claim your powerful hacking tool isn\u2019t being misused if you go out of your way to ensure you don\u2019t know how customers use it,\u201d Wyden says. \u201cThe fact that Paragon refuses to audit use of its tool, or even attempt to match the work of a small team of researchers at the Citizen Lab is a massive red flag.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">Israeli Intelligence Roots<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Paragon was launched in 2019 by Israeli Brigadier General Ehud Schneorson, former commander of the Israeli military\u2019s signals intelligence group, Unit 8200. He cofounded it with three other 8200 veterans and former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak. Two years later, the company reportedly <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/thomasbrewster\/2021\/07\/29\/paragon-is-an-nso-competitor-and-an-american-funded-israeli-surveillance-startup-that-hacks-encrypted-apps-like-whatsapp-and-signal\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/thomasbrewster\/2021\/07\/29\/paragon-is-an-nso-competitor-and-an-american-funded-israeli-surveillance-startup-that-hacks-encrypted-apps-like-whatsapp-and-signal\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/thomasbrewster\/2021\/07\/29\/paragon-is-an-nso-competitor-and-an-american-funded-israeli-surveillance-startup-that-hacks-encrypted-apps-like-whatsapp-and-signal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had no customers<\/a> but was developing Graphite and hoping to conquer the lucrative US market. But then the US government began cracking down on foreign spyware companies after NSO\u2019s Pegasus and Candiru\u2019s <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/socprime.com\/blog\/spyware-group-candiru-targets-journalists-in-the-middle-east-with-devilstongue-malware\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/socprime.com\/blog\/spyware-group-candiru-targets-journalists-in-the-middle-east-with-devilstongue-malware\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/socprime.com\/blog\/spyware-group-candiru-targets-journalists-in-the-middle-east-with-devilstongue-malware\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DevilsTongue tools<\/a> were misused by their customers against government workers, journalists, dissidents, activists, and academics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The US Commerce Department <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2021\/11\/commerce-adds-nso-group-and-other-foreign-companies-entity-list\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2021\/11\/commerce-adds-nso-group-and-other-foreign-companies-entity-list&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2021\/11\/commerce-adds-nso-group-and-other-foreign-companies-entity-list\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sanctioned<\/a> both companies in 2021, and the Israeli government <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.calcalistech.com\/ctech\/articles\/0,7340,L-3923361,00.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.calcalistech.com\/ctech\/articles\/0,7340,L-3923361,00.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.calcalistech.com\/ctech\/articles\/0,7340,L-3923361,00.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drastically cut<\/a> the number of countries to which Israeli firms could sell spyware\u2014from 102 countries to 37, excluding Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Morocco, and Mexico.
