Local cops had gotten a 911 call from Waymo staffers\u2014humans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tesla-says-its-robotaxis-are-sometimes-driven-by-humans\/\" class=\"text link\">it should be said<\/a>\u2014who were viewing the car\u2019s passengers through cameras installed inside the vehicle. It looked like two teens were shooting a black handgun out the window of the vehicle, playing with it and drinking between shots, a police report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The story has a happy(ish) ending: The gun was shooting water-filled Orbeez, not bullets. But the incident drew attention to Waymo\u2019s surveillance system. The cars are equipped with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/autonomous-vehicles\/\" class=\"text link\">automated tech<\/a> that can flag the presence of a firearm inside, the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The outsides of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/self-driving-cars\/\" class=\"text link\">self-driving cars<\/a> are studded with cameras, which help them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/guide-self-driving-cars\/\" class=\"text link\">\u201csee\u201d the world around them<\/a>. (Most also use other sensors, including radar and lidar.) Less appreciated are the cameras inside the vehicles, which companies say are essential to keeping riders safe and enforcing their rules. Earlier this year, Waymo said it used its cabin cameras to do both after some California passengers, many in their twenties or older, reported that Waymo employees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/waymo-trying-to-crack-down-on-solo-kids-in-driverless-cars\/\" class=\"text link\">suddenly took over the vehicles\u2019 intercoms mid-ride<\/a> to make sure they were old enough to ride on their own. (One 35-year-old told WIRED he thought his backpack sent up red flags.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Still, robotaxi privacy policies can be broad. They suggest that footage captured inside vehicles can be used for many innocuous and commonsense reasons\u2014to check cleanliness between rides, to detect lost items\u2014but also to improve their products or services. These catch-all terms could cover many uses. Experts say that in the US, few clear rules govern this sort of surveillance, especially because riders often must agree to lengthy \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/terms-of-service-didnt-read\/\" class=\"text link\">terms of service<\/a>\u201d printed in minute fonts before they use ride-hailing apps. That leaves riders to trust that the companies are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/i-demanded-my-data-from-over-100-companies-deletion-notices-started-arriving-instead\/\" class=\"text link\">handling their information responsibly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe are being essentially abandoned by our lawmakers when it comes to consumer privacy and what companies can do with information after they\u2019ve collected it,\u201d says Matthew Guariglia, a senior policy analyst at the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.eff.org\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Electronic Frontier Foundation<\/a>, where he works on surveillance and policing issues. His advice? \u201cJust because you\u2019re alone in the car doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re alone in the car. You should behave as if there\u2019s a jumpy person in the front seat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In general, robotaxi companies including Waymo, Zoox, and Tesla say that human staff view interior cameras only when needed. All say personal data, including recordings, may be sent to law enforcement or regulators.
