Now, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/nhl\/\" class=\"text link\">National Hockey League<\/a> wants to cash in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As part of its new \u201cHot for Hockey,\u201d campaign, the NHL is rolling out romance novel-inspired short stories starring the league\u2019s players on audiobook platforms. <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/09\/29\/nhl-winks-at-hockey-romance-subculture-with-hot-for-hockey-campaign\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/09\/29\/nhl-winks-at-hockey-romance-subculture-with-hot-for-hockey-campaign\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/09\/29\/nhl-winks-at-hockey-romance-subculture-with-hot-for-hockey-campaign\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">According to the Sports Business Journal<\/a>, the league contacted popular hockey romance writers to write and narrate the 60 to 90 second stories, and will tap creators on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/booktok-is-currently-embroiled-in-a-battle-over-the-us-election\/\" class=\"text link\">BookTok,<\/a> the romance-heavy literary subculture on TikTok, to promote the content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The first batch of short stories, which dropped this week, feature players including the Philadelphia Flyers\u2019 Trevor Zegras, the Carolina Hurricanes\u2019 Sebastian Aho, and the Las Vegas Golden Knights\u2019 Jack Eichel. They\u2019re written by <em>Pucking Wrong<\/em> author C.R. Jane and more closely resemble back-cover summaries than actual romance novels. And, despite the nods to genre tropes, the players aren\u2019t paired with romantic partners. Much more boringly, the stories appear to be a bid to get people to watch the actual games. The entirety of <em>The Summer I Turned Gritty with Trevor Zegras<\/em> is as follows:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cTrevor Zegras came to Philly looking for a fresh start. But after battling with Pittsburgh in the playoffs last year, he found out how <em>gritty<\/em> things could get. One <em>heated<\/em> summer later, Philly\u2019s pretty boy is looking a whole lot <em>grittier<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Not all romance readers are thrilled about the campaign. Some argue that it makes players targets for sexual harassment. Others see the stories as cheap pandering that fails to engage with female and LGBTQ hockey fans\u2019 concerns about homophobia and toxic masculinity in the sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI cannot begin to describe the depths of my rage that this is actually happening,\u201d Emily Rath, a best-selling hockey romance novelist, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@emilyrathauthor\/post\/Dd5VXnjnGga\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@emilyrathauthor\/post\/Dd5VXnjnGga&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@emilyrathauthor\/post\/Dd5VXnjnGga\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted on Threads.<\/a> \u201cYes, the NHL contacted me to participate. And I have never turned down an offer so fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">\u201cThey See Dollar Signs\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Romance novels focused on hockey players have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/romance-book-nerds-heroes\/\" class=\"text link\">on the rise for years<\/a>\u2014the New York Public Library <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nypl.org\/blog\/2019\/04\/10\/11-hockey-romance-novels\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nypl.org\/blog\/2019\/04\/10\/11-hockey-romance-novels&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nypl.org\/blog\/2019\/04\/10\/11-hockey-romance-novels\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first highlighted the trend<\/a> in 2019.
