Then Came the Hate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Bay Area lettering artist Jesscia Hische knew that when she took a freelance gig to design the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2026\/09\/introducing-muse-personal-ai-agent\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2026\/09\/introducing-muse-personal-ai-agent\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2026\/09\/introducing-muse-personal-ai-agent\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">M logo<\/a> for Meta\u2019s new AI assistant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/muse-creates-detailed-profiles-of-all-your-friends-and-family\/\" class=\"text link\">Muse<\/a>, it was bound to make some people angry. \u201cAI is such a third rail, and Meta is such a third rail,\u201d she tells me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Still, as a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/jessicahische.shop\/pages\/my-oakland-store\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/jessicahische.shop\/pages\/my-oakland-store&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/jessicahische.shop\/pages\/my-oakland-store\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">small business owner<\/a> who relies on client work to keep her two brick-and-mortar art and stationary shops in Oakland afloat, she says she needed the money. \u201cNew Work! (Don\u2019t be mad at me),\u201d Hische wrote in her newsletter last month. \u201cI worked with Meta on an icon and logotype for their latest release: Muse, which just launched! It\u2019s Meta\u2019s foray into the AI agent \/ personal assistant world. I know folks have big feelings about both AI and Meta, but this has been a really fun project for so many reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The news quickly went viral on Threads, where dozens of fellow designers criticized Hische for selling out. She responded to the haters by trying to explain the decision:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cFor the past year, I pretty much have 2-4 payrolls in my account at any given time, which if you own a small business, you know is pretty precarious,\u201d <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jessicahische\/post\/DdE3LYfD6wD\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jessicahische\/post\/DdE3LYfD6wD&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jessicahische\/post\/DdE3LYfD6wD\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she wrote<\/a>. She added that she had also invested $100,000 in Studioworks, an admin platform she runs for creatives, and $30,000 in Drawling, her art shop for kids in Oakland, where she hosts classes and workshops. \u201cI have 4 people on payroll including myself, my mom, and two shop employees,\u201d she added. Nothing she said seemed to help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cDisgusted,\u201d wrote one user. \u201cIt\u2019s not about money, it\u2019s about ethics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Another person responded saying, \u201cDoing this job is like doing a hit for the mob, and being surprised later when the mob takes you out too.\u201d Other users posted photos of Hische\u2019s house and speculated about her wealth and finances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Hische had expected some pushback from the artist community, but the level of vitriol caught her off guard. Even if people didn\u2019t like Meta, she felt the company should be commended for hiring an independent artist rather than using generative AI.
