Drive one off the lot, and it starts losing value the minute its wheels touch the road. That makes what\u2019s happening with the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/toyota\/\" class=\"text link\">Toyota<\/a> Rav4 downright weird.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Some used vehicles are listing for $3,000 to $6,000 above brand-new dealership prices, according to <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/dealers.cargurus.com\/blog\/cargurus-intelligence-report---q3-2026\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/dealers.cargurus.com\/blog\/cargurus-intelligence-report---q3-2026&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/dealers.cargurus.com\/blog\/cargurus-intelligence-report---q3-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new data<\/a> from the online automotive marketplace CarGurus. The months-old cars are aging like fine wine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The crossover SUV\u2014one of the top-selling in the US\u2014went <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-hybrid-cars\/\" class=\"text link\">all-hybrid<\/a> last year, after Toyota announced it would drop the gas-powered model from its lineup. That\u2019s likely why we\u2019re catching a glimpse of an economic Upside Down. Kevin Roberts, director of economic and market intelligence at CarGurus, says the situation reminds him of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/why-chip-shortage-drags-on\/\" class=\"text link\">pandemic-era chip shortage<\/a>, when a supply crunch for new cars also drove up used prices, and buyers flipped them months later for a profit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/america-hot-hybrid-summer\/\" class=\"text link\">Hybrid demand is so strong<\/a>, the Rav4 is still in that 2021 world,\u201d he says. Toyota can\u2019t make new models fast enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The leaves are changing, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/america-hot-hybrid-summer\/\" class=\"text link\">America\u2019s hot hybrid summer<\/a> has become a toasty hybrid autumn, for new cars and for old ones. Toyota reported this month that its hybrid sales are up 29 percent in the third quarter of 2026; Kia said its sales more than doubled. Nearly one in six new US cars sold is a hybrid, according to Cox Automotive data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe American market has a reputation for gas guzzlers, but we&#8217;re starting to shake that reputation because of how much we like hybrids,\u201d Roberts says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The major driver is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/one-solution-to-the-gas-price-spike-used-evs\/\" class=\"text link\">gas prices<\/a>. They\u2019ve skyrocketed since the start of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/iran\/\" class=\"text link\">Iran war<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/an-open-strait-of-hormuz-wont-fix-gas-prices-overnight\/\" class=\"text link\">ensuing conflict in the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, a global center of oil and gas production and shipping. Nationally, a gallon costs an average of $4.40, up 40 percent from this time last year, according to AAA; Californians pay an average of $6.36. Car buyers are a simple bunch, Roberts says\u2014when prices start rising, they immediately look for more fuel-efficient cars. Soon, drivers actually start buying them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">For now, struggles in the US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/electric-vehicles\/\" class=\"text link\">electric vehicle<\/a> market are hybrids\u2019 gain. New EV sales <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/insights\/q3-2026-cox-automotive-sales-forecast-update-content\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/insights\/q3-2026-cox-automotive-sales-forecast-update-content\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/insights\/q3-2026-cox-automotive-sales-forecast-update-content\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are down<\/a> by almost half from last year, after the Trump administration cut a federal tax credit that made the often-expensive powertrains more affordable. Unlike electrics, hybrids don\u2019t necessarily force drivers out of their familiar gas station routines. (Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-guide-to-buying-a-used-plug-in-hybrid-phev\/\" class=\"text link\">plug-in hybrids<\/a> sometimes need a gas top-up, though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/here-comes-the-flood-of-plug-in-hybrids\/\" class=\"text link\">smart owners depend mostly on electricity<\/a>.) Finally, more hybrids are available now than before. A buyer interested in nearly every major sort of passenger vehicle\u2014three-row SUVs, pickups, minivans, or luxury cars\u2014can find one with the powertrain<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Interest has spread to the used market, where hybrid prices are up almost 5 percent over last year, according to the automotive data website iSeeCars.com. At $34,500, the average price of used hybrids is higher than used EVs or gas-powered cars.
