{"id":8507,"date":"2026-10-11T10:03:29","date_gmt":"2026-10-11T10:03:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=8507"},"modified":"2026-10-11T10:03:29","modified_gmt":"2026-10-11T10:03:29","slug":"super-el-nino-climate-change-connections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=8507","title":{"rendered":"How the 2026 Super El Ni\u00f1o and Climate Change Are Related"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">The tropical Pacific<\/span> has seen heat build for months as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/2026-supersized-el-nino-impacts-worsen\/\" class=\"text link\">\u201csuper\u201d El Ni\u00f1o<\/a> takes shape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A climate phenomenon that forms every few years, this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-el-nino-means-weather-water-global-economy\/\" class=\"text link\">iteration of El Ni\u00f1o<\/a> has been on a tear of daily records and is forecast to reach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/2026-el-nino-the-strongest-in-150-years\/\" class=\"text link\">unprecedented strength<\/a> this winter. While it\u2019s characterized by hotter-than-normal waters in the eastern tropical Pacific, El Ni\u00f1o is a global problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It\u2019s fair to wonder how another global problem is interacting with El Ni\u00f1o: climate change, driven by burning fossil fuels. While a hotter climate begetting a hotter El Ni\u00f1o might seem like a done deal, \u201cI have more questions than I have reactions\u201d to what\u2019s happening, says Christopher Callahan, a climate researcher at Indiana University. In other words, the relationship is still an area of active research\u2014and this year\u2019s event could provide vital insights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">El Ni\u00f1o\u2019s added ocean heat affects the atmosphere causing weather patterns around the world shift. Consider it kind of like a domino run, where one tile starts a chain reaction. Such a major slug of heat in the Pacific will act more like a shove then a light flick on the atmosphere, and the resulting shifts in weather expected to be generationally intense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting 100 percent odds of an extremely strong El Ni\u00f1o through December, and above 80 percent odds it stays that way through February. Data shows this El Ni\u00f1o has already set <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/zekehausfather.com\/post\/3mxaievzvxl2w\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/zekehausfather.com\/post\/3mxaievzvxl2w&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/zekehausfather.com\/post\/3mxaievzvxl2w\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">multiple all-time daily heat records<\/a> including a recent peak of 3.4 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">NOAA issues its El Ni\u00f1o forecast as a three-month rolling average, and the agency predicts heat could peak at 2.7 degrees Celsius above normal for the period from October to December. (It\u2019s not out of the question heat could surpass 3 degrees Celsius, though.) If the forecast holds true, it would smash the previous record of 2.4 degrees Celsius, which was set during the 1982-1983 event.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">How Is Climate Change Impacting El Ni\u00f1o?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">There is a growing body of evidence that climate change is likely playing at least some role in influencing El Ni\u00f1o. The magnitude and frequency of the phenomenon has increased over the past 60 years, says Francisco Estrada, coordinator of the Climate Change Research Program at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and so has the variability and how the effects are distributed around the world. He says there shouldn\u2019t be a debate framed as a choice between a \u201cnatural El Ni\u00f1o\u201d and an \u201cEl Ni\u00f1o caused by climate change,\u201d but rather as an interaction between the two processes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cYou can\u2019t separate El Ni\u00f1o from global warming\u2014they\u2019re inextricably linked,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Modeling also indicates that El Ni\u00f1o is likely to strengthen as the planet warms, though Callahan notes that many models struggle to accurately represent long-term temperature trends in the eastern tropical Pacific.
