{"id":8549,"date":"2026-10-12T13:55:30","date_gmt":"2026-10-12T13:55:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=8549"},"modified":"2026-10-12T13:55:30","modified_gmt":"2026-10-12T13:55:30","slug":"new-york-comic-con-star-trek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=8549","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The Sixty-Year Mission\u2019 Brings the Legacy of \u2018Star Trek\u2019 to a New Generation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">William Shatner wasn\u2019t<\/span> sure if the audience would approve of his new documentary or not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">When the 95-year-old star took the stage at the Regal Times Square theater for the New York premiere of <em>The Sixty-Year Mission: How Star Trek Changed Television and the World<\/em> he said \u201cmaybe you\u2019ll like it, maybe you won\u2019t.\u201d But, the Captain Kirk actor declared, \u201cyou\u2019re going to see a lovely film made by people who cared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Focusing on the original <em>Star Trek<\/em> series, which ran from 1966 to 1969, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/trek60.com\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/trek60.com\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/trek60.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Sixty-Year Mission<\/em><\/a> is written and directed by Mark A. Altman, creator of the <em>Inglorious Treksperts<\/em> podcast. The documentary, which screened during New York Comic Con and hit select theaters this weekend, explores the show\u2019s cultural impact and legacy, and also demonstrates how much it was a product of the political climate of the era in which it was made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI think audiences are pleasantly surprised that <em>Sixty-Year Mission<\/em> shows how the \u201860s shaped <em>Star Trek<\/em>,\u201d Altman explains. For the film, Altman interviewed dozens of prominent fans and stars, from Shatner and Simon Pegg to <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em> stars Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner. The president\u2019s niece\u2014and <em>Trek<\/em> fan\u2014Mary L. Trump praises the show\u2019s pioneering representation, specifically Nichelle Nichols\u2019 Lieutenant Uhura. George Takei, who played Sulu, gives a harrowing account of his time in an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II. Others discuss how characters like Spock became heroes for queer fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As has been well-documented, these considerations were important for Gene Roddenberry, the show\u2019s creator, who died in 1991. He was a WWII veteran with a progressive bent despite years spent in traditionally conservative spaces like the US Army and the Los Angeles Police Department. Altman insists that \u201cCaptain Kirk was \u2018JFK: Space Captain,\u2019\u201d and that President Kennedy\u2019s idea of a New Frontier was the final frontier that <em>Trek<\/em> sought to explore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Shatner, however, didn\u2019t initially see the show that way at all. \u201cI didn&#8217;t think in those terms when they offered me the role,\u201d says Shatner, who served as executive producer on <em>Sixty-Year Mission<\/em>. \u201cI thought, \u2018I got a regular paid job.\u2019 Only later did the magic of <em>Star Trek<\/em> happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Part of that magic, Shatner adds, is how \u201c<em>Star Trek<\/em> had an effect on people\u2019s lives.\u201d Those people come from many backgrounds, and the show remained accessible because of the very special tension that existed within its politics, Altman explains. \u201cRoddenberry was liberal on social issues but hard-nosed on defense, and that is absolutely what <em>Star Trek<\/em> is,\u201d he says. \u201cWe need our phasers to defeat the Klingons, but we believe in a diverse crew.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/new-york-comic-con-star-trek\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>William Shatner wasn\u2019t sure if the audience would approve of his new documentary or not.
