{"id":8629,"date":"2026-10-13T23:33:35","date_gmt":"2026-10-13T23:33:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=8629"},"modified":"2026-10-13T23:33:35","modified_gmt":"2026-10-13T23:33:35","slug":"an-openai-employee-allegedly-used-a-chatbot-to-help-plant-a-recording-device-at-the-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=8629","title":{"rendered":"An OpenAI Employee Allegedly Used a Chatbot to Help Plant a Recording Device at the Office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">An engineer at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/openai\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenAI<\/a> allegedly concealed an audio recording device in a piece of toilet paper and attached it behind a monitor inside an executive conference room at one of the company\u2019s San Francisco offices, according to a criminal complaint unsealed on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Abdulrahman Alfozan, who federal prosecutors describe as a 35-year-old Saudi Arabian national and US permanent resident, allegedly spent several weeks querying an unspecified \u201cproductivity agent\u201d and an \u201cAI chatbot\u201d to plan his alleged surveillance operation. He used an internal OpenAI tool to ask about meetings scheduled in the targeted conference room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He also appears to have used a chatbot account associated with his spouse to ask various technical questions about setting up a covert audio recording device, according to prosecutors and the court filing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">OpenAI\u2019s security team also allegedly found an additional recording device that had not been installed in Alfozan\u2019s bag at the office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Alfozan couldn\u2019t be immediately reached for comment. He made an initial appearance in US district court in San Francisco on Tuesday on one charge of \u201cuse of an electronic, mechanical, or other device to intercept oral communications.\u201d If convicted, Alfozan faces up to five years in prison. He joined OpenAI in July 2025 and was fired last Friday to coincide with his arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Federal Bureau of Investigation director Kash Patel said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/saudi-national-arrested-installing-surreptitious-audio-recording-device-openai\" class=\"text link\">a statement<\/a> that Alfozan aimed \u201cto secretly capture sensitive communications about the company\u2019s super intelligence technology,\u201d but prosecutors nor OpenAI have offered any information so far about a potential motive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAt this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data,\u201d OpenAI said in <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OpenAINewsroom\/status\/2110095403198849132\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/OpenAINewsroom\/status\/2110095403198849132&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OpenAINewsroom\/status\/2110095403198849132\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a statement on X<\/a>. \u201cWe take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">OpenAI discovered the bug\u2014which was allegedly \u201cconcealed in toilet paper\u201d and \u201cinserted into a USB port on the back of a television\u201d in the conference room\u2014on September 30 during a countersurveillance sweep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Alfozan previously worked at a cargo logistics startup and at Meta, according to a purported LinkedIn profile for him. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u1Dq_g-d9XI&amp;list=PLf2Sqfp61n8sezpNipyKN5uCH0kPMmEht\" class=\"text link\">recent podcast interview<\/a>, Alfozan said he was also part of a group of Saudi engineers in Silicon Valley who offered <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/saudisiliconvalley.com\/SaudiSiliconValleyTechConsulting.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/saudisiliconvalley.com\/SaudiSiliconValleyTechConsulting.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/saudisiliconvalley.com\/SaudiSiliconValleyTechConsulting.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">consulting services<\/a> to Saudi organizations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The LinkedIn profile lists Alfozan as a part-time \u201cventure partner\u201d at RAED Ventures, a venture capital firm based in Saudi Arabia.
