It would be \u201cthe fastest sports car ever made, period,\u201d Musk said on stage in 2017. \u201cThe point of doing this is to give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars.\u201d Lights flashed, and the red prototype did a few speedy laps behind him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Times have changed. Musk is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/elon-musks-america-pac-is-quietly-funding-novembers-most-consequential-elections\/\" class=\"text link\">leading donor to a political party<\/a> that last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/5-big-ev-takeaways-one-big-beautiful-bill\/\" class=\"text link\">nixed buying incentives for electric vehicles<\/a> and last month <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/28\/climate\/trump-gas-cars-mileage-standards.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/28\/climate\/trump-gas-cars-mileage-standards.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/28\/climate\/trump-gas-cars-mileage-standards.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adjusted fuel-economy standards<\/a> to make it easier for automakers to skip making EVs altogether. Musk has said he\u2019s not even in the business of making cars anymore, instructing investors to think of Tesla as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tesla-going-all-in-on-robotaxis\/\" class=\"text link\">robotics and autonomy company<\/a>. On Thursday night, Tesla will host what it has billed as its last unveiling event for a human-driven vehicle. Six years after it was supposed to roll into driveways, the Roadster 2 is finally here. Tesla is slated to start deliveries next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cEVs exist today in a massively different environment than when the Roadster was introduced,\u201d says Ed Kim, president of AutoPacific, an automotive research firm. When Tesla announced the car back in 2017, electrics were \u201ctoys for early adopters,\u201d he says. By 2020, other automakers saw Tesla\u2019s sky-high valuations and lawmakers\u2019 plans to transition vehicles to batteries and made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ford-kills-electric-f-150-lightning-for-hybrid\/\" class=\"text link\">big electric promises<\/a>, investing heavily in the shift. China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/electric-vehicles-china-takeover\/\" class=\"text link\">began to dominate EV-making<\/a>. Now, after the Trump administration reversed the US\u2019s course on the powertrain, EV sales are shrinking, not growing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Still, lots more options are available now. In 2017, research firm Cox Automotive says, US customers had 15 EVs to choose from; today, that number has jumped to nearly 90. Potential EV buyers are more likely to be normies, and so their needs are more practical. \u201cPeople are looking for range, performance, charging ability, resale value,\u201d says Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of Industry Insights at Cox.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">What success looks like for the Roadster, then, is a bit complicated. It\u2019s a hypercar targeted squarely at, well, non-normies\u2014people who like to show off and go very, very fast. Some of them <em>want<\/em> that signature gasoline-engine power and roar. That\u2019s why some luxury automakers have taken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/bentley-wants-its-torcal-suv-to-break-the-curse-of-the-luxury-ev\/\" class=\"text link\">pains to reproduce the sound of a V-8<\/a> without one present. Lamborghini said earlier this year it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/lamborghini-is-latest-to-pull-the-plug-on-luxury-evs\/\" class=\"text link\">shelve electrics altogether<\/a>. Even Bugatti\u2019s CEO, who founded his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/rimac-nevera-hypercar-first-drive\/\" class=\"text link\">own electric hypercar company<\/a>, said <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/25\/bugatti-ceo-mate-rimac-supercars-gas-engines.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/25\/bugatti-ceo-mate-rimac-supercars-gas-engines.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/25\/bugatti-ceo-mate-rimac-supercars-gas-engines.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he expects loud ICE cars<\/a> to become a status symbol among the wealthiest car buyers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cEVs in this space really have to wow the shopper with a lot more than practical things,\u201d says Kim. \u201cGreat range, really quiet, charging at home\u2014none of that matters.\u201d In 2017, Tesla said the car would start at $200,000; reservation holders <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/autos\/they-paid-50-000-and-waited-nine-years-will-teslas-roadster-live-up-to-the-hype-fae975c0\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/autos\/they-paid-50-000-and-waited-nine-years-will-teslas-roadster-live-up-to-the-hype-fae975c0&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/autos\/they-paid-50-000-and-waited-nine-years-will-teslas-roadster-live-up-to-the-hype-fae975c0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">put down $50,000 deposits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In 2017, Musk promised a then-record-breaking sub-2-second 0-to-60 acceleration time. Now that a handful of other production cars have broken that barrier, Tesla will have to meet a high bar.
