{"id":8728,"date":"2026-10-15T14:22:04","date_gmt":"2026-10-15T14:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=8728"},"modified":"2026-10-15T14:22:04","modified_gmt":"2026-10-15T14:22:04","slug":"new-york-comic-con-panel-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=8728","title":{"rendered":"Junji Ito\u2019s Manga Horrors Hit Harder as Live-Action TV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">\u201cIt definitely makes<\/span> you wonder truly who is the real monster in the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Director Y\u00fbta Shimotsu is describing events in a new episode of live-action J-horror anthology show <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.hbomax.com\/show\/8713b59c-1443-4cd7-bb28-b248bb34c139\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.hbomax.com\/show\/8713b59c-1443-4cd7-bb28-b248bb34c139&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hbomax.com\/show\/8713b59c-1443-4cd7-bb28-b248bb34c139\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Strange: Junji Ito&#8217;s Tales for Sleepless Nights<\/em><\/a>, but he could be referring to almost any episode.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The award-winning manga artist of the title, whose macabre short works are adapted into disturbing 30-minute bites, has a way of blurring lines between protagonist and antagonist amid his surreal nightmares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><em>Tales for Sleepless Nights<\/em> aired its 12-episode first season on TV Tokyo this summer, and now HBO Max is bringing those eerie frights to US audiences. The first two installments \u201cLovesickness (Part 1 of 3)\u201d and \u201cThe Bully\u201d (previously animated for Netflix\u2019s <em>Junji Ito Maniac<\/em>) are currently available, but New York Comic Con fans were treated to the US premiere of the episode \u201cFace Thief\u201d based on Ito\u2019s story \u201cThe Face Burglar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cFace Thief,\u201d which was previously turned into a Japanese TV movie in 2000, follows the new girl in school, Machida (Nanami Yamazaki), who encounters a weirdly clingy classmate named Kamei (Anna Hoshino). After she sees an identical-looking girl in class who claims she is not related to Kamei, Machida learns this changeling\u2019s MO: \u201cShe befriends cute girls then steals their faces.\u201d Indeed, Kamei\u2019s face begins shifting during close conversations with Machida. This repulses the new girl at first, but when Kamei scares away some bullies by growing a third eyeball on her cheek, the two start to bond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">We will not spoil the outcome, but the filmmaker turns it into a biting critique of the conformity and peer pressure common in Japanese society. As he told the crowd after the premiere, \u201cWe have social pressure that we are supposed to not to be too different from others. Individuality is not very respected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Despite Shimotsu\u2019s desire to shape-shift the story by \u201cchanging the ending so my live-action version was different,\u201d \u201cFace Thief\u201d still manages to capture the slow burn feel of the original comic published in the pages of <em>Monthly Halloween<\/em> in 1987, the same year Ito\u2019s famous debut <em>Tomie<\/em> appeared. That sh\u014djo (for girls) manga magazine\u2019s offshoot <em>Nemuki<\/em> (\u201cStrange Stories of Sleepless Nights&#8221;) inspired the new TV omnibus\u2019s title.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Junji Ito himself, now a bespectacled 63-year-old, appeared before NYCC in a video message where he described \u201cFace Burglar\u201d as an early tale he came up with after several unsuccessful stories submitted to his publishers: \u201cNot a ghost, just a unique condition inspired by chameleon camouflage.\u201d Ito added that the new adaptation for <em>Tales for Sleepless Nights<\/em> was \u201cbrought to life by a fresh team of upcoming actors and directors. Rather than jump scares, it builds a slow creeping dream perfect for horror.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Another means through which Shimotsu (<em>Best Wishes to All<\/em>, Shudder\u2019s <em>New Group<\/em>) finds the essence of Ito in all the episodes he helmed is through stillness in the performances and camerawork that evokes the comic book pages. He told a fan that he hopes to push fidelity to the material one step further in season 2 by shooting at least one episode in black-and-white, Ito\u2019s preferred mode of illustration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">When asked by a con attendee which of Ito\u2019s works he would most like to adapt next, the director earned applause by answering <em>Uzumaki<\/em>, the groundbreaking horror manga which has been brought to the screen several times, including a recent <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.hbomax.com\/show\/f3ba329b-1089-44bc-a844-6177fa69930e\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.hbomax.com\/show\/f3ba329b-1089-44bc-a844-6177fa69930e&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hbomax.com\/show\/f3ba329b-1089-44bc-a844-6177fa69930e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">4-part anime series<\/a> for Adult Swim. The latter version had a famously rocky production, with quality diving after the first episode to the point that the fourth installment had no director credit. A new live-action version would be incredible\u2014and incredibly strange\u2014in Y\u00fbta Shimotsu\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI would love to keep creating very bizarre, unique aesthetics like Mr. Ito&#8217;s work.
