It clips right onto the frame and is noticeable but not as obnoxious as you might think.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Don\u2019t forget the AI assistant, Vive AI, which can utilize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/chatgpt\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/google-gemini\/\" class=\"text link\">Google\u2019s Gemini<\/a>. It doesn\u2019t require a login, so users are \u201cde-identified\u201d in a way that keeps the services from retaining personal information. (That also means, by default, you won\u2019t be able to enjoy many of the personalization features these chatbots offer by gleaning information from your emails and messages.) The glasses come with <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.vive.com\/us\/solution\/vive-ai\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.vive.com\/us\/solution\/vive-ai\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vive.com\/us\/solution\/vive-ai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vive\u2019s AI Plus<\/a>, free for the first two years. After that, users must pay a monthly $2.50 subscription fee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Right by the cameras is a bright indicator light. If you cover the light, it won\u2019t record. If someone around you says stop recording, that will stop the recording. Video footage you capture is encrypted and stored on the glasses\u2014it\u2019s not automatically sent to the phone or cloud. If you want to import photos or videos, you have to do it manually in the app.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Meta has faced scrutiny over the indicator light before, as some users have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tiktok-promotes-stickers-for-secretly-recording-meta-ray-ban-video\/\" class=\"text link\">blocked the LED with stickers<\/a> or broken into the hardware to turn it off. Meta has responded with <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2026\/07\/metas-ai-glasses-your-questions-answered\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2026\/07\/metas-ai-glasses-your-questions-answered\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2026\/07\/metas-ai-glasses-your-questions-answered\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">software updates<\/a> that disable the camera if someone tampers with the indicator light, along with other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/meta-pinky-promises-its-smart-glasses-are-going-to-be-private-soon\/\" class=\"text link\">privacy-focused measures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I ask McDowell how HTC, and really any smart glasses maker, can get past the \u201ctrust me, bro\u201d\u2013style privacy promises companies tend to make.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe&#8217;re not a social media company,\u201d McDowell says. \u201cThere&#8217;s no benefit to me to have any of your info. We don&#8217;t train our AI model or any third-party AI models with any of the information that is used on the glasses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The real problem may be that with cameras on the frames, smart glasses are hard to distinguish between brands. The Vive Eagles look a lot like Meta glasses, and people worried about those privacy issues may not know that the Eagles are different and not tied to Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s company. I\u2019ve had friends see me wearing them and ask if they\u2019re smart glasses. Yeah, I replied, but not the ones they\u2019re thinking of. That didn\u2019t seem to dispel any of their suspicions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The hope, at least how HTC frames it, is that more players with better privacy practices will help shift cultural disdain for smart glasses. A bunch of other companies are going cameraless, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/review-even-realities-g1-smart-glasses\/\" class=\"text link\">Even Realities<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/viture-vonder-glasses-are-meant-to-map-your-mind\/\" class=\"text link\">Viture<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/halliday-new-smart-glasses-skip-the-camera\/\" class=\"text link\">Halliday<\/a>. Others are building theirs with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/these-new-smart-glasses-from-solos-come-with-a-privacy-shield-for-the-cameras\/\" class=\"text link\">privacy shields<\/a> or focusing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/all-work-and-some-play-in-a-virtual-display\/\" class=\"text link\">virtual displays<\/a> instead of capturing the world around you.
