{"id":8911,"date":"2026-10-18T09:07:32","date_gmt":"2026-10-18T09:07:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=8911"},"modified":"2026-10-18T09:07:32","modified_gmt":"2026-10-18T09:07:32","slug":"climate-change-has-it-in-for-the-worlds-best-surfing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=8911","title":{"rendered":"Climate Change Has It In for the World\u2019s Best Surfing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">This story originally<\/span> appeared on <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/oct\/10\/climate-crisis-putting-world-best-surf-breaks-at-risk?CMP=share_btn_url\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/oct\/10\/climate-crisis-putting-world-best-surf-breaks-at-risk?CMP=share_btn_url&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/oct\/10\/climate-crisis-putting-world-best-surf-breaks-at-risk?CMP=share_btn_url\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian<\/a> and is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatedesk.org\/\" class=\"text link\">Climate Desk<\/a> collaboration.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">The climate crisis<\/span> is coming for some of the world\u2019s greatest surf breaks, submerging some as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/west-antarctica-is-missing-way-too-much-ice\/\" class=\"text link\">sea level rises<\/a> and wiping out others as classic breaks get crushed against coastal developments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Analysis of dozens of famous waves in <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.savethewaves.org\/wsr\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.savethewaves.org\/wsr\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.savethewaves.org\/wsr\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Surfing Reserves<\/a> (WSR) found that more than three-quarters were at high risk because of changing tide levels, hardened shorelines, and shifting sands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The impacts matter not only to the surfers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/firewire-neutrino-surfboard-rave\/\" class=\"text link\">catching the waves<\/a> but also to the communities that depend on the multibillion-dollar surf economy, often located in places with little else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The waves rated at most risk in the study include the \u201cbombing barrels\u201d of Croyde Beach in North Devon, UK; the point breaks at Noosa in Australia and Oriente Salvaje, El Salvador; and Santa Cruz reefs of California such as Sewer Peak and Wind and Sea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-hidden-math-of-ocean-waves-crashes-into-view\/\" class=\"text link\">best surfing waves<\/a> are created by intricate combinations of seafloor shape, swell direction, and tide. \u201cSurf breaks are incredibly unique oceanographic phenomena\u2014a confluence of all these factors that fit together just right to make the wave happen\u2014and so those processes are really sensitive,\u201d said Dan Reineman, an associate professor at California State University Channel Islands and a coauthor of the study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Global heating is pushing up sea level and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/super-el-nino-turns-worlds-weather-upside-down\/\" class=\"text link\">changing rainfall patterns<\/a> that affect sediment movement, which can upset the delicate balance and destroy the wave. However, the researchers said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/egypts-climate-resilient-super-corals-are-starting-to-feel-the-heat\/\" class=\"text link\">expert local knowledge<\/a> of surfers could be tapped to help protect the waves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Trent Hodges, a coauthor of the study and a senior programs manager at Save the Waves Coalition, which launched the WSR program in 2009, said: \u201cClimate change will impact surf breaks all over the world in different ways, depending on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/nasas-new-3d-model-shows-lumpy-earth\/\" class=\"text link\">unique geographies<\/a>. We learned directly from the local surfers how they are seeing their waves change. It\u2019s a canary in the coal mine too\u2014when a wave changes, that often means the beach is changing, and everybody enjoys the beach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The study, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10584-026-04264-8\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10584-026-04264-8&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10584-026-04264-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published in the journal Climatic Change<\/a>, concludes: \u201cClimate change and coastal management both have significant negative implications for the future viability of multiple surf breaks of global significance and, therefore, the myriad distinct local communities, cultures and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/el-nino-wreaking-havoc-on-pacific-fisheries\/\" class=\"text link\">economies they support<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Almost 200 local experts analyzed 57 surf breaks in all but two of the 13 WSRs, spread across eight countries. The researchers said thousands of other surf waves around the world faced similar peril.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A key finding was that where coastlines were more natural, they could adapt better to the changes brought by the climate crisis, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/one-citys-escape-plan-from-rising-seas\/\" class=\"text link\">shifting inland<\/a> and relocating sediments. Development such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/be-very-careful-about-where-you-build-that-seawall\/\" class=\"text link\">sea walls<\/a>, jetties, and groynes made the beaches and waves less resilient, Reineman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Adam Hall, a cofounder of the North Devon WSR, was one of the local surfers who contributed to the study. He said: \u201cNorth Devon is so special. We have Saunton Sands, a world-renowned longboarding wave with really long, mellow rides, and the UK\u2019s best beach break at Croyde. We\u2019ve got left- and right-hand point breaks and a sheltered spot for when it gets too windy and too big. Whatever you want to do, we\u2019ve got it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He said surfing was very important for the local economy, and not just in summer. \u201cSurfers will come throughout the year.
