The bug, reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2026\/10\/19\/google-home-speaker-downloads\/\"><em>9to5Google<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/googlehome\/comments\/1x9n3oh\/home_speaker_downloading_247\/\">several Reddit users<\/a> over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/googlehome\/comments\/1x8h77a\/google_speakers_like_to_gobble_data\/\">the last week<\/a>, may be caused by the speakers failing to correctly download and install a firmware update, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/googlehome\/comments\/1x4xp06\/google_home_smart_speaker_using_200gb_per_day\/\">one Redditor finding<\/a> that his device was consuming more than 200GB per day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Thankfully, Google is aware of the issue. In a statement to <em>9to5Google<\/em>, the company said that \u201ca fix is already rolling out that should address this for users.\u201d Most of the reports are tied specifically to the new Google Home Speaker model, but it isn\u2019t clear how widespread the issue is. We\u2019ve reached out to Google to request more information about the cause and confirm impacted devices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">My colleague Tom Warren confirmed that his own speaker is unaffected, and <em>9to5Google<\/em> reports another Home Speaker in a different household downloaded just 2GB in the past month, compared to to 132GB used by an impacted device over the same period.
