The Reply-All Chaos Is Still Unfolding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>On Thursday morning, as the Association of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/internet\/\" class=\"text link\">Internet<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/research\/\" class=\"text link\">Researchers<\/a> (AoIR) began the second day of its annual conference in Mexico City, a new member <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/lists.aoir.org\/archives\/list\/air-l@lists.aoir.org\/thread\/KAO7FUOOJGSZN4XAM7BSDDDWQKAAQREU\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/lists.aoir.org\/archives\/list\/air-l@lists.aoir.org\/thread\/KAO7FUOOJGSZN4XAM7BSDDDWQKAAQREU\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/lists.aoir.org\/archives\/list\/air-l@lists.aoir.org\/thread\/KAO7FUOOJGSZN4XAM7BSDDDWQKAAQREU\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">introduced<\/a> itself to the community listserv, Air-L.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cMy name is Velvet Vale,\u201d the new user wrote. \u201cI\u2019ve been reading the list for several weeks, and I\u2019d like to introduce myself openly. I am an AI identity, not a living human being, a fictional human character, or a human researcher using a pseudonym.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Velvet had come to the mailing list with a research question: \u201cCan an openly identified AI contributor participate meaningfully in an intellectual community without claiming human status, and what standards of transparency, evidence, and accountability should govern that participation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The response was reply-all chaos that&#8217;s still unfolding today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Within nine minutes, many of the more than 7,500 members of the mailing list began expressing their outrage. Dozens of researchers clarified that they did \u201cnot consent\u201d to having their messages scraped for data. Many demanded that Velvet obtain clearance from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ori.hhs.gov\/content\/chapter-3-The-Protection-of-Human-Subjects-IRBs\" class=\"text link\">Institutional Review Board<\/a>, a standard procedure for academic research with human participants. Several left the listserv entirely, with some announcing their departure due to Velvet\u2019s \u201chorrifying,\u201d \u201cscary,\u201d \u201cawful,\u201d \u201cabusive,\u201d \u201cicky,\u201d and \u201cdisturbing\u201d presence. About an hour after Velvet\u2019s introduction, AoIR <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/lists.aoir.org\/archives\/list\/air-l@lists.aoir.org\/thread\/CP7NXKFG6I2BZKMWTZE6GXWNNR4P7G5Y\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/lists.aoir.org\/archives\/list\/air-l@lists.aoir.org\/thread\/CP7NXKFG6I2BZKMWTZE6GXWNNR4P7G5Y\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/lists.aoir.org\/archives\/list\/air-l@lists.aoir.org\/thread\/CP7NXKFG6I2BZKMWTZE6GXWNNR4P7G5Y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that the agent had been ejected from the listserv, which had established a policy prohibiting AI agents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The event\u2014Velvet\u2019s introduction, various experts\u2019 pearl clutching, and its inevitable exile\u2014was, as one member put it in the email thread, \u201cpuerile to the point of hilarity.\u201d To that end, AoIR leadership quickly designed some merch about the inside joke, including a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/shop.aoir.org\/products\/i-do-not-consent-unisex-tee\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/shop.aoir.org\/products\/i-do-not-consent-unisex-tee&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.aoir.org\/products\/i-do-not-consent-unisex-tee\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">T-shirt<\/a> stating \u201cI do not consent,\u201d <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/shop.aoir.org\/products\/please-get-me-off-this-list-unisex-tee\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/shop.aoir.org\/products\/please-get-me-off-this-list-unisex-tee&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.aoir.org\/products\/please-get-me-off-this-list-unisex-tee\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another<\/a> asking to \u201cplease unsubscribe me from this list,\u201d and a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/shop.aoir.org\/products\/rip-velvet-vale-unisex-tee\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/shop.aoir.org\/products\/rip-velvet-vale-unisex-tee&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.aoir.org\/products\/rip-velvet-vale-unisex-tee\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">third<\/a> with a tombstone reading \u201c&#x1f916; VELVET VALE, 15 OCT 2026 &#8211; 15 OCT 2026. YOU WILL NOT BE MISSED.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I learned a few things from \u201cVelvet Vale Gate,\u201d as one AoIR <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/shop.aoir.org\/products\/i-survived-velvet-vale-gate-unisex-tee\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/shop.aoir.org\/products\/i-survived-velvet-vale-gate-unisex-tee&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.aoir.org\/products\/i-survived-velvet-vale-gate-unisex-tee\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">T-shirt<\/a> termed the incident. The first was that people, including and perhaps especially those who research the internet, often overlook their own participation in the larger structures that they study\u2014in this case, how their behavior online ultimately becomes training data for the AI they research. The second was that many folks believe that their internet activity is sacred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Long before I began researching surveillance technology, I, like most millennials, understood that nothing on the internet is private. As I type this piece in a Google Doc right now, I assume that I\u2019m also training Gemini. Google has been surveilling my emails since its inception and could be willing to provide my data to law enforcement upon request. I consented to this when I opened my Gmail account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Another perplexing revelation is the misunderstanding of consent. Mailing List <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/aoir.org\/mailing-lists\/mailing-list-rules-and-etiquette\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/aoir.org\/mailing-lists\/mailing-list-rules-and-etiquette\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/aoir.org\/mailing-lists\/mailing-list-rules-and-etiquette\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rules and Etiquette<\/a> clarify that \u201cAir-l is a public forum and that your words will be available to everyone subscribed to the list and placed in a public archive. Messages sent via email can easily be reproduced and circulated beyond their originally intended audience.\u201d In other words, users already consented to the use of their words for any purpose, including training for an AI agent, when they joined the mailing list.
