It\u2019s not hard to see why. As social media devolves into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/big-tech-wont-let-you-leave-heres-a-way-out\/\" class=\"text link\">slop<\/a>\u2014and Google into a glorified landing page for Reddit threads and content farms\u2014most of us are starved for something reliable. Plus, chatbots are so <em>helpful<\/em>, aren\u2019t they? The first time I interacted with one, I asked if it knew it was a huge drain on resources. Half an hour later, I had a new recipe for vegan cream cheese.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I never tried the recipe. Instead, I found a human-created one that the LLM might have scraped. That\u2019s the way these models work, of course. They repackage collective knowledge into something that feels tailored to you. This may be OK for dairy alternatives (unless you\u2019re a vegan blogger). But on the order of the world, and <em>truth<\/em>\u2014the focus of my role as a fact-checker at WIRED\u2014the stakes are exponentially higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Over the past year or so, more and more people have looked at me with great pity. Surely a fact-checker at a magazine isn\u2019t long for this AI-upgraded world. Call me foolish, but I\u2019m not that worried. Very little of humanity\u2019s collective knowledge, I\u2019ve concluded, lives on the internet. And according to my research, AI is even more wrong than people might think.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Tom Wolfe evidently<\/span> thought of fact-checkers, according to the writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/special_report\/rise-and-fall-of-fact-checking.php\" class=\"text link\">Colin Dickey<\/a>, as a \u201ccabal of women and middling editors all collaborating to henpeck and emasculate the prose of the Great Writer.\u201d As definitions go, it\u2019s not bad (though my boss and many colleagues are men). What can I say? It\u2019s our job, <em>unlike AI\u2019s<\/em>, to be annoying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">WIRED\u2019s fact-checking department is old-school: meticulous line-by-line annotations, primary sources whenever possible, and a broader-scale ethical and legal review. We question basic assumptions, look for new or conflicting information, call and talk to people\u2014make sure. It\u2019s a quick-hit peer review, functioning as best it can at the same pace as the news itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As far as I can tell, AI hasn\u2019t come for this process quite yet. What it has come for is \u201cpost hoc\u201d fact-checking, the Snopes-style analysis of something\u2019s factuality after the fact. In the UK, an initiative called <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/fullfact.org\/ai\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/fullfact.org\/ai\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/fullfact.org\/ai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Full Fact<\/a> has built out its own AI tools to help thwart the spread of misinformation. These tools, used in more than 40 countries, process huge volumes of data, from social media posts to podcast transcripts, then pinpoint specific claims that humans can investigate further. \u201cYou definitely need a human being,\u201d says Mark Frankel, Full Fact\u2019s head of public affairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The reason for that is simple: AI still gets things wrong. As a fact-checker, I\u2019d love to be able to tell you exactly how often. But it\u2019s not so easy. Since 2018, nearly 17,000 papers have been <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/html\/2307.10700v4\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/arxiv.org\/html\/2307.10700v4&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/html\/2307.10700v4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted to arXiv<\/a> on LLMs, many focused specifically on the question of their reliability. Still, it\u2019s worth trying to pin down a working figure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In any article that comes across WIRED\u2019s fact-checking desk, there\u2019s usually a decent amount of \u201cb-matter\u201d: statistics, news events, quotes, anything that helps contextualize the topic. Fact-checkers tend to Google this basic information, and that process, in the form of the search engine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-ai-overviews-says-its-still-2024\/\" class=\"text link\">dreaded AI Overviews<\/a>, constitutes my main interaction with AI. In my professional opinion, it\u2019s unusable\u2014wrong\u2014about a third of the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This might be a generous assessment, though. A March 2025 study from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/tow_center\/we-compared-eight-ai-search-engines-theyre-all-bad-at-citing-news.php\" class=\"text link\">Tow Center for Digital Journalism<\/a> found that more than 60 percent of responses from AI-powered search engines were inaccurate. A BBC study puts the wrongness of chatbots <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/mediacentre\/2025\/new-ebu-research-ai-assistants-news-content\" class=\"text link\">closer to 45 percent<\/a>, the number I see cited more often.
