It\u2019s a sprawling fantasy adventure that took five years to complete. The process involved more 230 puppets \u2014 including 36 of the main character Prue alone \u2014 which were brought to life by a team of 49 animators. All told, more than 1,000 artists worked on the film in some form. The painstaking process that goes into making a Laika film offers a distinct counterpoint to the instant progress promised by generative AI tools.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Recently <em>Wildwood<\/em> director and Laika CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/antiai\/comments\/1xbiclk\/wildwood_director_travis_knight_says_ai_is_not_a\/\">Travis Knight joined<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/10\/guillermo-del-toro-would-rather-die-than-use-generative-ai-1236597071\/\">a chorus<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/f-ai-star-wars-and-knives-out-director-rian-johnson-blasts-ai-as-making-everything-worse-in-every-single-way\">of influencer<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2026\/jul\/13\/christopher-nolan-odyssey-director-comments-ai-artificial-intelligence\">filmmakers<\/a> in denouncing the technology. So when I had a chance to speak to Knight ahead of <em>Wildwood<\/em>\u2019s premiere on October 23rd, I asked him what it\u2019s like releasing a film like this at a time when AI tools seem inescapable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cIn so many ways generative AI is antithetical to everything that we are at this studio,\u201d Knight told me. \u201cIt\u2019s not that we don\u2019t believe in technology. We do. We use technology, we use computers. We\u2019re not just making films entirely with tools that we\u2019ve inherited from a watchmaker\u2019s widow. A pencil is technology, a paintbrush is technology, a 3D printer is technology, a computer workstation is technology. But all of these things have meaning and value when you put them in the hands of an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote c39lj10\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup c39lj12 _19wv7tc9\">\u201cThere is no humanity in what comes out of the other side of that\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In fact, <em>Wildwood<\/em> is full of technical advances for Laika, many of which iterate on the studio\u2019s previous work. Many puppets are now equipped with diaphragms, for instance, that animators can use to make it appear as if characters are breathing. There is more advanced musculature on the puppets\u2019 limbs, as well as more robust and flexible materials for clothing, hair, and fur. All of these elements together create a film that is decidedly more lifelike than its predecessors. For Knight, these tools and their continued advancement are an important part of the filmmaking process, but generative AI is something very different.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cWhen the technology is doing the work of the artist, that\u2019s a different proposition,\u201d he explains. \u201cAnd that\u2019s something that I am steadfastly against, because there is no humanity in what comes out of the other side of that. When you\u2019ve ingested the material that an artist has actually created, and then regurgitate it in a different way, there\u2019s no soul, there\u2019s no spirit, there\u2019s no humanity behind it. That\u2019s theft. I really do believe that when you\u2019re telling a human story, when you\u2019re telling a story about loss and grief and something that means something to someone, that has to come from a person. A computer has never fallen in love. A computer has never lost someone. They\u2019ve never made a terrible choice and lost a brother. They\u2019ve never had their heart broken. Only a person has done that. And so only a person can speak to what that experience is and what that feels like.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _18mzr4ba _19wv7tc1\">\u201cI think AI is extraordinary technology,\u201d he says. \u201cOn the one hand you have to marvel at the advancement of it. And I do think that it\u2019s going to be disruptive to our society and our world. I think there are a great many benefits that can come from it when you look at medicine and science. There\u2019s a world in which these things can benefit humanity tremendously. And then there\u2019s a world where they can be devastating. I fear for the latter, I hope for the former, but it requires people to be good stewards of this technology. As a group of humans we have not shown generally that we\u2019re good at that.
