"Funny

What are you going to be for Halloween? Every year I say I’m not going to dress up — only to end up in a last-minute costume scramble! For inspiration, we put out a call on Instagram and were thrilled with the turnout. Here are 10 truly great reader costumes…

"fork

“Last year, I was determined to win our neighborhood bar’s costume contest — the prize is free tots for life. So, I found a photo from a vintage costume book and brought it to Somsack Sikhounmuong, our creative director at Alex Mill. We spent multiple late nights working on the costume at the office, but the final product was incredible. When my friend Lily and I showed up at the bar, everyone loved it. We ended up winning and celebrated with a fork-and-spoon victory dance.” — Rose Florence Anderson, Brooklyn

"bouquet

“A few years before, I was a bouquet of flowers, inspired by Gigi Hadid’s look down the runway of a Moschino show — and perfectly fitting my flower name!” — Rose, Brooklyn

"Fruit

“My work team decided to do the group costume of ‘Fruit of the Loom.’ Everyone in the office loved it, although I realized I hadn’t thought through how it would feel to work at my desk under a layer of balloons. Still, worth it.” — Jessi Baer (the grapes), Long Beach, California

"Pen15

“My husband and I dressed up like bffs Anna and Maya from Pen15. He wore the famous Tommy Hilfiger shirt, and we both wore friendship necklaces and did plenty of awkward cheesin’ on the dance floor. It was perfect for our vibe; I’m not sure how we’re ever going to top it.” — Emily, Chicago

"bucatini

“In 2022, Alison Roman’s pantry pasta was having its moment, and my then-boyfriend Amar and I loved making it together when we wanted comfort food. (I’m happy to report that I married the bucatini!)” — Alissa, Berkeley, California

"Bert

“My husband, Ryan, and I dressed as Ernie and Bert, a Muppet duo that matches our personalities. Ryan’s Bert eyebrow was a thick fuzzy ribbon from a kiddie craft kit, held on with Scotch tape. Bless his heart.” — Christie, Austin

"Pink

“I’m a huge fan of puns. Last year I was Pink Pony Club. No one ever gets my costumes, and honestly, that’s part of the fun for me.” — Emily O., Pittsburgh

"ice

“My family and I dressed up as our favorite treat: ice cream! My oldest and I were ice cream cones, my husband held the scoop, and our youngest was the cherry on top.” — Vivian, St. Catharines, Ontario

"Gummy

“I have a deep love of Nerd Gummy Clusters, so much so that it’s become my calling card with the kids in my life. My nieces, my nephews, and my friends’ kids will all text me when a new flavor drops; they send me selfies while eating bags on airplanes. Last year, I decided to wear this Nerd Cluster costume. Then, last week, I volunteered at the school cafeteria, and a small child tapped me on the leg and asked, ‘Were you the Nerd Cluster last Halloween?’ I’ve never felt more famous in my life!” — Kathleen, Seattle

"Kevin

“I decided to go all out and dress as Kevin McCallister from Home Alone, specifically when he goes grocery shopping. I had studied what groceries Kevin actually shopped for and got them from the pantry and grocery store. I collected the exact amount of cash that Kevin had to pay, and even carried some extra coins so I could say ‘Keep the change, ya filthy animal!’” — Loes, the Netherlands

What about you, and the kids in your life? What Halloween costumes have you loved? We’d love to hear!

P.S. Spooky Halloween snacks and the costume that always makes our team laugh.
