The French government asserts that, based on current knowledge of this pathogen, there is no risk to the general public. It emphasized, however, that health authorities are continuing to investigate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The report specifies that the case occurred in Lyon. The patient, who died earlier this month, suffered from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/measles-outbreaks-immunocompromised-kids-schools\/\" class=\"text link\">severe immunosuppression<\/a>, making this likely an exceptional case. \u201cThe neurological complications observed in the immunocompromised patient prior to his death were most likely related to infection with the Shamonda virus,\u201d the official statement notes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">According to preliminary evidence, the patient contracted Shamonda virus from an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/genetic-mutation-drug-resistant-malaria-spread\/\" class=\"text link\">insect bite<\/a>. A tiny gnat known as the biting midge is known to be the primary route of transfer between animals. Since the virus was first identified in Nigeria in the mid-1960s, sporadic infections have been reported in livestock across Africa as well as in Japan. Cattle are considered the primary host because they develop visible symptoms. (Although sheep and goats can become infected, no obvious clinical signs have been documented in these animals.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/flesh-eating-screwworms-have-entered-the-us\/\" class=\"text link\">animal is bitten<\/a> by a midge carrying Shamonda virus, the infection has an incubation period of two to three days. Symptoms observed in animals include fever, diarrhea, and a decrease in milk production. When pregnant cows have become infected, the virus can cause miscarriages or severe deformations in the calf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">To date, there is no vaccine, so prevention and control measures rely on the use of insecticides and repellents. That doesn\u2019t mean you should panic. Public health <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/agriculture.gouv.fr\/virus-shamonda-une-premiere-detection-chez-letre-humain\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/agriculture.gouv.fr\/virus-shamonda-une-premiere-detection-chez-letre-humain&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/agriculture.gouv.fr\/virus-shamonda-une-premiere-detection-chez-letre-humain\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">authorities are considering<\/a> the case to be \u201cexceptional,\u201d because the deceased patient was severely immunocompromised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Still, several European countries are on alert, because until a few months ago, this region was considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/us-recorded-first-measles-deaths-2026\/\" class=\"text link\">free of the virus<\/a>. However, this summer, a new variant known as Shamonda-Europe was detected in livestock in Switzerland. Other cases were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tropical-diseases-dengue-fever-and-chikungunya-on-the-rise-in-europe\/\" class=\"text link\">subsequently identified<\/a> in Germany, France, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Liechtenstein, Italy, and Spain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Spain\u2019s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.mapa.gob.es\/es\/ganaderia\/temas\/sanidad-animal-higiene-ganadera\/sanidad-animal\/enfermedades\/virus_shamonda\/virus_shamonda\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.mapa.gob.es\/es\/ganaderia\/temas\/sanidad-animal-higiene-ganadera\/sanidad-animal\/enfermedades\/virus_shamonda\/virus_shamonda&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mapa.gob.es\/es\/ganaderia\/temas\/sanidad-animal-higiene-ganadera\/sanidad-animal\/enfermedades\/virus_shamonda\/virus_shamonda\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">states<\/a> that two genetically distinct forms of the virus, known as Shamonda Type 1 and Shamonda Type 2, have been identified circulating in Europe.
