To receive this newsletter in your inbox each week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/newsletter\/exclusive\/kernel-panic\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">sign up here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As security teams and web admins scrambled this week to patch newly public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/this-is-not-a-drill-2-php-vulnerabilities-are-setting-the-internet-on-fire\/\" class=\"text link\">PHP bugs<\/a>, criminal hackers quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/hackers-exploited-the-php-vulnerabilities-days-before-they-were-patched\/\" class=\"text link\">attempted to exploit<\/a> the flaws in the wild. Millions of exploitation attempts hit within hours of the vulnerabilities being published, according to analysis from Cloudflare\u2014unsurprising given broad access to AI tools that can make it easier for attackers to quickly exploit flaws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">So far, the nightmare scenario of mass victim takeovers and breaches hasn\u2019t come to pass. The PHP Foundation says it hasn\u2019t seen any successful exploitation of the bugs, collectively dubbed PHP2Shell, and many publicly circulating potential exploits <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.rapid7.com\/blog\/post\/etr-cve-2026-109618-and-cve-2026-109619-critical-unauthenticated-remote-code-execution-in-php\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.rapid7.com\/blog\/post\/etr-cve-2026-109618-and-cve-2026-109619-critical-unauthenticated-remote-code-execution-in-php\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rapid7.com\/blog\/post\/etr-cve-2026-109618-and-cve-2026-109619-critical-unauthenticated-remote-code-execution-in-php\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">appear to be<\/a> <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/cyberplace.social\/@GossiTheDog\/117489133794519499\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/cyberplace.social\/@GossiTheDog\/117489133794519499&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/cyberplace.social\/@GossiTheDog\/117489133794519499\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ineffective<\/a>. However, perhaps the most interesting role of AI amid the chaos this week is how advanced models helped researchers uncover practical exploitations for the vulnerabilities, which were known about, at least in part, for years. In other words, AI helped turn historic vulnerability into a current crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">So are we all about to be walloped by a wave of critical vulnerabilities that have been kicking around for decades?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Researchers at security company Calif were the first to identify the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/calif.io\/php2shell\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/calif.io\/php2shell\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/calif.io\/php2shell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PHP2Shell vulnerabilities<\/a> and create exploits in early August\u2014partially using frontier AI tools as part of OpenAI\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-launches-full-scale-effort-to-patch-open-source-bugs-as-it-takes-on-anthropics-mythos\/\" class=\"text link\">Patch the Planet<\/a> program, but also using expert human knowledge of PHP, its dynamics, and its weaknesses. Some of the underlying issues were identified in <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/thephp.foundation\/blog\/2026\/10\/21\/todays-php-security-release-and-how-were-strengthening-php-security\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/thephp.foundation\/blog\/2026\/10\/21\/todays-php-security-release-and-how-were-strengthening-php-security\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/thephp.foundation\/blog\/2026\/10\/21\/todays-php-security-release-and-how-were-strengthening-php-security\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2024<\/a> but were deemed too complex to exploit at the time. Following Calif\u2019s discovery, researchers at OpenAI and the Google-owned security firm Wiz independently discovered PHP2Shell flaws using AI tools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe vulnerability had been known to the PHP team for years, but because it could not be leveraged by an attacker\u2014at least, not a human one\u2014it was not addressed,\u201d says Sagi Tzadik, a security researcher at Wiz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">No software is perfect. There are inevitably flaws in even the most critical, foundational digital tools, but the expanding capabilities of AI models have made it faster to analyze and potentially exploit vulnerabilities. This puts even more pressure on under-resourced IT teams, developers, and admins to keep up. Microsoft\u2019s security updates included a record <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/releaseNote\/2026-Oct\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/releaseNote\/2026-Oct&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/releaseNote\/2026-Oct\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1,453 security vulnerabilities<\/a> this month alone. Meanwhile, Bank of America recently hired <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/10\/14\/anthropic-mythos-bank-of-america-hiring-cost.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/10\/14\/anthropic-mythos-bank-of-america-hiring-cost.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/10\/14\/anthropic-mythos-bank-of-america-hiring-cost.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1,000 consultants<\/a> to fix flaws discovered by Anthropic\u2019s Mythos.
