There are the fun, occasionally goofy songs like \u201cThe Monster Mash\u201d and John Carpenter\u2019s \u201cHalloween Theme.\u201d Then there is the genuinely terrifying: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Fih-xzWGKPA\">Throbbing Gristle<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/column\/806767\/you-need-to-listen-to-the-body-ive-seen-all-i-need-to-see\">The Body<\/a>, or Scott Walker\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/scottwalker.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-drift\"><em>The Drift<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">This 2006 album from the singer-songwriter is truly upsetting. On it, Walker explores death, disease, and tragedy. But not just from some abstract perspective. There are visceral descriptions of the hanging of Benito Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci. He sings about 9\/11, his stillborn twin brother, and the Srebrenica genocide. Lyrically, it\u2019s about as dark as an album gets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">But it\u2019s the experimental backdrop that drives it all home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">At times, the record sounds more like the score to an Ari Aster film than anything that could be called pop music under even the most generous definitions. Seasick guitars in the verses of \u201cJesse\u201d give way to dissonant strings that drone oppressively over the chorus. You can feel the low-bitrate MP3 noise that opens \u201cClara\u201d in your jaw, which also allegedly features the sound of his percussionist punching a pig carcass as part of the rhythm track.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Songs stop on a dime, linger in uncomfortable silence, then erupt in bursts of mechanical noise. Animal bleating, foley work, and atonal orchestra sections grind against Walker\u2019s warble. Nothing is ever quite in tune, and it can be challenging to get through the record in a single sitting if you\u2019re not in a very particular mood. But sticking with it can be quite rewarding.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Some <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0-EF60neguk\">songs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7-eojWOjMc4\">performances<\/a> are so beautiful they send shivers down your spine or give you goosebumps. Scott Walker\u2019s <em>The Drift<\/em> is the opposite of that. You will still have an involuntary physical reaction, but it\u2019s more shudders than shivers.
