It\u2019s the primary component of what the fossil fuel industry calls \u201cnatural gas\u201d that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/8\/3\/23287271\/methane-leaks-texas-permian-basin-oil-gas\">routinely leaks<\/a> from oil and gas wells and pipelines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is reversing course on its previous efforts to plug those leaks. As part of President Donald Trump\u2019s deregulatory agenda, the EPA plans to undo Biden-era <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/controlling-air-pollution-oil-and-natural-gas-operations\/epas-final-rule-reduce-methane-and-other\">rules<\/a> that were expected to cut methane emissions by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2023-12\/epas-final-oil-and-gas-rule.-overview-presentation.pdf\">80 percent over 14 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote c39lj10\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup c39lj12 _19wv7tc9\">Methane has caused about 30 percent of global warming<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The EPA teased the rule change earlier this month, saying in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/administrator-zeldin-announces-epa-days-away-unveiling-next-oil-gas-proposal\">press release<\/a> that it was \u201cdays away\u201d from making the proposal. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin says the rollbacks will save oil and gas companies $45 billion, while the previous rules would have incurred $18 billion in regulatory costs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cThis proposal takes on many of the problems American [oil and gas] producers and operators have raised with us,\u201d Zeldin said in the October 7th press release. \u201cThe Trump EPA is committed to fixing this so the U.S. can reach its full energy potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The agency is expected to step back standards for so-called \u201cmarginal wells\u201d \u2014 old wells that produce little fuel but create an outsize amount of methane pollution from leaks. These wells are responsible for half of the industry\u2019s methane emissions despite only producing 6 percent of US oil and gas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/methane-gas-epa-proposal-stripper-wells\">ProPublica reports<\/a>. The EPA is also expected to end the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/compliance\/methane-super-emitter-program\">Super Emitter Program<\/a> that notified oil and gas infrastructure operators of large releases of methane reaching 100 kilograms per hour or more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Methane has caused about 30 percent of global warming so far. But unlike carbon dioxide, which can linger in the atmosphere for hundreds or thousands of years, methane dissipates in a little over a decade. That makes eliminating methane emissions, particularly from unintentional leaks, one of the fastest and most straightforward ways to stop global temperatures from rising.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The EPA\u2019s rollbacks quickly triggered furor from health and environmental advocates. \u201cAny proposed rollback to the federal methane rule is a slap in the face to families who are exposed to oil and gas pollution where they live, work, and play,\u201d Celerah Hewes, a senior manager for state field campaigns at Moms Clean Air Force, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.momscleanairforce.org\/press-releases\/methane-pollution-protections-weakened\/\">said<\/a> in an email ahead of the expected announcement. \u201cFor over a decade, [our group] has been fighting for methane protections for our families\u2014and we were making progress. Today\u2019s announcement from EPA is a massive blow to the efforts to safeguard our children\u2019s health and our climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The Biden-era methane rules were estimated to bring in up to $98 billion in benefits by reducing climate risks and health costs from air pollution, even after factoring in the costs of compliance.
